It's been confirmed - Titanic and Emmerdale actress Jenna-Louise Coleman is the new Doctor Who companion! But before she hops aboard the TARDIS with Matt Smith's Time Lord, why not check out our ten interesting facts about the 25-year-old star?

1. Coleman was born in Blackpool, Lancashire, England on April 27, 1986.

2. She won the role of lesbian Jasmine Thomas on ITV soap Emmerdale in 2005, whilst auditioning for drama schools.

3. In 2006, Jenna-Louise admitted that part of her regretted missing out on the traditional university lifestyle that her friends enjoyed. "Part of me feels sorry I'm missing that," she said. "But I'm living the life I want."

4. Later that year, Coleman expressed a desire to work more in the theatre, telling a fansite: "I'd love to work across all three fields - theatre, film and TV. Definitely theatre – I miss it!"



5. During her Emmerdale stint, the actress was nominated for National Television Awards, TV Choice Awards and British Soap Awards.

6. In May 2009, Coleman joined the cast of the BBC's Waterloo Road and admitted that it felt "surreal" to be playing a schoolgirl aged 23. "It felt weird putting on the uniform," she said.

7. 2010 saw the actress star opposite Matthew McNulty in a BBC Four adaptation of John Brain's 1957 novel Room at the Top - Coleman played the part of Susan Brown.

8. Jenna-Louise made her big-screen debut in last year's Marvel Comics superhero spectacular Captain America: The First Avenger.



9. She'll next appear in ITV1's epic drama Titanic as Annie Desmond, an Eliza Doolittle-esque stewardess described by Coleman herself as a "cheeky little cockney".

10. Coleman will replace Karen Gillan as Doctor Who's chief companion midway through the sci-fi drama's seventh run!
