University Degrees
Letters denoting university degrees are fourth in the order of precedence of letters after the name, following orders and decorations conferred by the Crown, Royal appointments, other appointments (Queen's Counsel, Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lieutenant). All letters after the name are preceded by the abbreviation Bt (Baronet) - if applicable - and Esq.
Doctorates in the faculties of Divinity and Medicine (DD, MD) and Masters degrees in the latter (eg MS) are given in all correspondence. Other Divinity degrees (eg BD) are sometimes included.
Other degrees in medicine (e.g. MB BS) are sometimes included, especially in professional correspondence, but if one progresses in the same degree only the higher is given.
Doctorates in other faculties are sometimes given, especially if the correspondence concerns the particular profession or subject (eg LLD, DSC). Alternatively, except for surgeons, the envelope may be addressed as 'Dr' before his name, without giving his/her degrees.
Other degrees are seldom used in social correspondence, and BA and MA are never used in social correspondence, but they may be included in a formal list.
