Considerations

Sophisticated and elegant, bridesmaids are a complement to the bride but must in no way draw attention away from her.

The bridesmaids are most likely to wear a dress or a bodice and skirt. It is imperative to choose gowns that will flatter all figures: a sensible option is to dress the bridesmaids in various styles but in the same colour.

The choice of dress must reflect the style of the wedding: long evening gowns are appropriate for traditional elegance, but more contemporary styles that may be used after the event as party dresses are also a practical option.

The choice of colour should fit with the bride's dress, flowers and the time of year. For example, pink or blue bridesmaid dresses are popular in the summer, but red or gold dresses may suit a winter wedding. Some brides choose bridesmaid dresses in an unconventional style or colour, such as black. Skin tones should be borne in mind when deciding on colours and fabrics.

Pregnant bridesmaids should choose a flexible style to allow for a changing shape. Empire line dresses are a good option for maternity bridesmaid dresses.

The bride should be allowed the final say over attire, but she must be willing to be flexible.
