Avalanche Signs O'Byrne To Two-Year Deal

The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that the team has signed defenseman Ryan O’Byrne to a two-year contract through the 2012-13 season.
O’Byrne, 26, appeared in 64 games with Colorado after being acquired from Montreal on Nov. 11. The Victoria, B.C., native tallied a career-high 10 points (0g/10a) while finishing second on the Avalanche in average time-on-ice at 20:24. He led Colorado in hits (168), finished second on the club in blocked shots (126) and was third in penalty minutes (71). The 6-foot-5, 234-pound defenseman also skated in three games for the Canadiens, tallying no points and four penalty minutes.
“Ryan brings size to our defense,” said Avalanche General Manager/Executive Vice President Greg Sherman. “We are pleased to have him under contract for the next two years and look forward to him continuing his career with our organization.”
Selected by Montreal in the third round (79th overall) of the 2003 Entry Draft, O’Byrne has appeared in 192 career NHL games, collecting 26 points (2g/24a) and 252 penalty minutes.
The Avalanche also announced today that the club has signed defenseman Matt Hunwick to a one-year contract through the 2011-12 season. Hunwick, 26, was acquired from Boston on Nov. 29 and went on to register 10 points (0g/10a) in 51 games with the Avs. The Warren, Mich., native skated in a combined 73 games between the Avalanche and Bruins, collecting 13 points (1g/12a).
Boston’s sixth choice (seventh round, 224th overall) in the 2004 Entry Draft, Hunwick has tallied 55 points (13g/42a) in 215 career games. He has also dressed in 14 playoff games.
