Jamal Edwards, MBE

Founder, SB.TV

Amateur film-maker from a West London council estate turned multi-millionaire tycoon, Jamal Edwards has become the paradigm of the 21st Century self-made man. After receiving a video camera for Christmas when he was 15, West London-born Edwards started out filming his friends’ rap freestyle videos and uploading them to YouTube long before he was aware of the possibilities of making money from it. Since he founded SB.TV in 2006 it has become a multi-faceted media platform for music-related content and has helped launch the careers of acts like Ed Sheeran. It is now the go-to channel for up-and-coming artists, reaching 100 million views in 2012. Edwards was recognised in this year’s New Year Honours list, being made a MBE for services to music.
