Don't Worry, Rocket League Isn't Adding Power-Ups or Weapons

Private matches could, however, get mutators that let players mix things up.

Following some recent confusion over comments made in an interview, Rocket League developer Psyonix has clarified that it doesn't have plans to introduce things like power-ups to the game.

"There are not going to be power-ups added to the game," Pysonix's Dave Hagewood wrote on Reddit. "We're not going to change balance, add stats [e.g. "different max speeds"], change physics, etc. We have a good formula and there are already infinite ways to make the game even better without changing core gameplay."

This clarification came after a PSU.com article in which Psyonix was quoted as having said, "Weapons aren't something we plan to add in Rocket League--but power-ups are possible."

It turns out that isn't exactly the case, as Hagewood explained, "That answer may have been based on the possibility of adding mutators that allow private matches to change things up for a single match just to mix things up but absolutely not for regular gameplay."

That's good news for those who enjoy Rocket League's core gameplay. And there appear to be many who do, as Pysonix yesterday announced on Twitter that the concurrent player record (the highest number of people playing at one time) had again been broken, and was now over 179,000 people.

We should be hearing details about an upcoming patch before long. An official tweet recently said, "Wow. Looking at our fix list for the patch, we have some really helpful stuff in there. We'll start going over the list soon as we finalize!"

Rocket League's launch was plagued with matchmaking issues as servers were unable to handle the number of players attempting to get online. Things have stabilized since earlier this month, and we should be seeing the game's first DLC (both free and paid) soon.

Rocket League is available on both PC and PS4, with PlayStation Plus members getting the latter version for free. For more, check out GameSpot's review and our video with tips on becoming a better player.

Pong 2015, not a 9.. sorry. This game def belongs in a freeware section, which it is at the moment on the PSN network. Nothing original about this and gets boring atfer 30 minutes. If you enjoy knocking an object around randomly using RC cars Pong style then you're. This is a great game for on-the-toilet.

@brostepper: Someone is salty. Maybe you just can't understand the brilliance in the simplicity of the game that allows for complex strategies and skill building. Have you actually tried the game yet? Or are you judging it without playing it. OR have you played it and am simply not good at it. Eitherway maybe you could respect the fact that it is a good game that you just do not like, but it may still deserve the score even if it isn't your cup of tea.

Thank you! Don't change a thing, just keep adding to it.

Wow I really thought PS+ members would get the PC version... derp

GS is a bit nutty. How does a cool looking and fun little game such as this receive a 9 score and a truly amazing gaming experience that is Dying Light got a 7.......... this game is very cool and simple, but Pong 2015 doesn't merit a 9. This War of Mine received an 8, but was considered one of the best indie games ever by many, with beautiful art design and endless gameplay...... and then Pong 2015 gets a 9? Rethink your scoring possibly. By the way, This War of Mine got a 10 on Steam, so it's not just me betching.

Posted by Otterbee

@brostepper: Because games are reviewed independently of one another, rather than relative to each other. Does "Pong 2015" set out to do what it intended to do, and does it do it very well? The answer is YES. It's a simple game, but what it does it does extremely well.

Does This War of Mine set out to do what it intended to do, and does it do it very well? The answer is YES there too; however, it's a bit more complex and maybe some of the elements kinda miss the mark.

Don't take it too personally, or hold it against the reviewers. Games reviews aren't meant to be compared to one another in the manner that you are suggesting.

Edited by KJouda

@otterbee:

No, he's right

why do those retarded reviewers take points from games when they dont even mention any negatives in their reviews ?

DOTA 2 took a 9. when the only bad it had was: "it takes over you're life"even the bad is actually a positive. but still took a 9. Because its not made by EA ? or maybe its not called GTA ? I dont know why. same with Team Fortress 2. same with others.

If you dont have any negatives and you loved the game. why not give a 10 ?!

I'm pretty sure those sick reviewers tell themselves: I cant give a simple indie or multiplayer game a 10 and make it equal to something like the witcher 3. lets give it a 9.

Witcher for example took a 10 when its buggy as fuck and its performance is a piece of shit. 20 FPS in latest patch. even PS1 runs faster than this crap.

EDIT: not to mention the trash combat system it has. Super Nintendo games had better combat systems.

Posted by BroStepper

@kjouda Witcher 3 was buggy, cause you're a console peasant, and the combat is awesome. You lack education as to what a good ACTION-RPG is. Go play Final Fantasy and charge up your five minute spells.

Posted by Dickyslamm

@brostepper: Because Dying Light has a bunch of holes and is by no means a amazing gaming experience for me and many others. Even though I love the genre.

Edited by BroStepper

@Dickyslamm If Dying Light is a bad game, then Mirror's Edge is a bad gaming experience. That game was gorgeous and inventive. How many zombie games do you know of that did parkour stuff, while looking like eye candy? The game was awesome and more inventive and creative than RC cars hitting a ball around into soccer goals. :Rocket League is a pong game made with updated visuals... sorry, that game is not a 9 score, 7 at the most. It brings nothing new to gaming by being a pretty jazzed up Pong game. Sorry!

Edited by Awperator666

@brostepper: oh this game totally deserves the 9 rating it got

Posted by AuberonFall

@awperator666: Agreed. Pong 2015 is actually much higher praise than this guy realizes.

This game is unbelievably fun.

Posted by JohnBeaver

This is a good news!

They need to resist from the tentation of Xp and asymetric contents to satisfy the leveling/grinding stuff people.

This game need to be a test of skill with fair matches. People need to relearn fair and balanced games. It's fun on his own way, fans will still play it over time.

I think right now they need to focus on matchmaking, tournament options and server occasionally latency.

Posted by Razrabbit

Hahaha wow, haters ball up in here. :)

But seriously, its a fun game, and i'm not even a sports or racing sort of guy. The 5 minute matches are perfect to play in chunks so you can get in there, have some fun, and take a break if you need to.

Easy to pick up, and even when you're going against players much better than you, you don't feel helpless. The replays really make you feel like a star.

Posted by jonconner33

I would prefer they reduce the bounce of the ball a bit.

Posted by KBABZ

I wouldn't mind a few optional tweaks you could add, like lighter/heavier gravity or unlimited boost as options for Private and Unranked matches. Some Party options would be great as well like Party Leagues and knock-out Championships (which would go great with 1v1).

The only reason people like this repetitive game with lack of content is because it's "free" on the ps4. Where real gamers though play on pc it's not even that high on steams top played games, imagine that. People are playing more of skyrim than a new game.. ;) But yeah.. Lets go by the fanboys and claim the game is absolutely amazing.. ;) By the way.. the reason why there is a record of 179,000 concurrent players is once again due to the game being "free" on ps4. Wait to july is over and watch game barely break 100k. ;)

@kolz4ever:

Awesome games dont have to cost you a billion dollars to make so you can enjoy and respect them. look at Destiny. 500 millions budget by Bungie ? and its a total piece of shit. Witcher 3 = 1 of the shittiest performances I ever seen in a video game. Latest patch gives you a cool 20 frames per second lol.

and I can count a lot of stupid boring as hell games that only get respect for no worthy reason. Just because they are called AAA games.

About Skyrim, still my favorite game, but you cant consider its PC mods into account, because no other game has this option. Its the only thing that keeps Skyrim alive until now. I had it on PS3 and it was so boring after 70 hours. then I bought it on PC and OMG how the game was much different, I spent like 400 hours on PC version. Elder Scrolls franchise is only good for PC.

Im pretty sure I'm gonna like rocket league because I love competitive multiplayer and simple fun games. I'm so bored of RPG, Action........ all types of single player.

Posted by kolz4ever

@kjouda You do realize the 20 fps for witcher 3 is console trash people right? Real gamers on pc doesn't have those issues. ;) keep up brah. And yes destiny was the biggest piles of shits ever made. it's a poor man's mmo which explains why they didn't bring it to the better platform like pc because even bungie knew it would flop on the real gaming machine due to so many real mmo's on here. Only console trash people could actually enjoy that game and is easily proven many times over. I enjoy rocket league but I hate the idea of cross platform because due to console trash noobs I always get the worse losing teams possible. Although they always claim they are the top of leader boards and can beat pc people.. you know the old routine. ;) :

@kolz4ever: real gamers? what a douche lol and whats wrong with people liking a game that is free? its fun deal with it

Edited by cHeStRc0pPeRp0t

@kolz4ever: ive been destroying PC players in rocket league so i guess you are wrong .......... and you keep saying "real gamers" ....... console gamers = people who actually have lives outside of video games and just like to have fun playing games ..... PC gamers = people who dedicate their entire life to video games with no social life or real friends (only online friends) ........ and their are good players and bad players on both PC and consoles and im going to bet you are one of the shit players on PC you are not a "real gamer"

Posted by KBABZ

@kolz4ever: That explains why the ESO added it to its list of official eSports games.

Careful guys, it seems like this game might be messing up some people's systems. I just got this game for my brother on steam, and it caused his whole computer to shutdown. I haven't heard if he got the pc up and running again. I've read on the forums that some other people were concerned that this game messed up their hardware too( works fine on my PC though).

Posted by NL_Skipper

I gotta get to my PS4 before the end of the month so I can get this for free! Looks like fun but I don't think I'd fork out the asking price of $22 on Steam right now.

Posted by cHeStRc0pPeRp0t

@kolz4ever: you are one angry NoLifeRace PC gamer arent you lol ?

Posted by kolz4ever

@chestrc0pperp0t: Can't stand when console noobz are on my side causing the game to lose. I rather have real gamers winning the game that's why I play pc games. Maybe you like losing because of shit teammates?

So, you would rather spend $399 plus tax and $50 for 1 year of PSN to get a game for free. Than to pay $22 on steam and play it now? I don't get it.

@6t4gp: learn how to read lol i get that you are a douche PC gamer but come on how did you not understand what he was saying ? hahahah

I can read. He said he didn't want to pay for it on steam and had to hurry up and get a PS4 to get the game for free. Did I miss something? Also if you have to revert to name calling be accurate. I'm a PC and CONSOLES douche. Thank you.

I stand corrected. You are right I misread his post. I guess that is what can happen when you read things on a phone. My bad.

I found the game to be boring. At a friends house, after 20 minutes of playing, I inquired as to whether or not the game has weapons you could use too. I also didn't have much desire to keep playing after those 20 minutes. Soccer bores me, as do driving games, and the mesh isn't something I really enjoyed. There wasn't a whole lot of variety in it.

Edited by Reduc_Ab_

@Poodger: Weapons? Dude, it's a sports game.

Posted by Poodger

@reduc_ab_: Maybe that is the problem, I loathe sports in general, especially sports games.

@chestrc0pperp0t: Whatever will I do now that some random guy online doesn't trust me!!?? How can I operate in life now?

Posted by cHeStRc0pPeRp0t

@Poodger: lol it was just a joke man no need to take it so personally

Posted by cHeStRc0pPeRp0t

@reduc_ab_: next hes going to be asking for guns in madden LOL

Posted by Poodger

@chestrc0pperp0t: I am not going to lie, I would be FAR more interested in boring ass madden games if I could run around the field with some swords or shotguns....

good, the core gameplay is perfect the way it is. goofy modes would be fine for private matches but leave the public matches the way they are and expand on them with things like new maps with different field dimensions

Posted by SuperKlyph

That game is outstanding.

Posted by whalesex

I'd really like to see a small variety in the arenas. For instance, a couple of pillars or just a raised area of ground in the middle that you can drive on top of. Wouldn't mess with balance at all and would add some variety.

Posted by Goron24

No powerups or mutators... so no depth of play? Yup game will last a week

Posted by Reduc_Ab_

Eat it. Must not have a platform that can play this game because it can be the same for months and tons of people would still be loving the insane action going on in this game.

Be jealous, this game is really good.

You know it's also on PC? So, it's not a PS4 exclusive and anyone with a PC can play it.

@Goron24 It's already been out for a few and its growing every day. You're clearly uninformed. Fantastic game.

Posted by whalesex

@whalesex It's growing because it's given to people on ps4. Which is why there are more console trash players than real gamers from pc. ;) Watch those numbers fade out big time when July is over.:

You might want to check Steam to see what the top selling game is right now. Idiot.

Don't know about you,... but some somehow I've seen that less people comment on GS articles since the new comment system was implemented.....

Posted by NL_Skipper

@Intocable: Probably... because it's terrible. I've also been clicking on fewer news articles because... you guessed it... they're terrible, too much click-bait and a lot of errors recently.

Eh, GS is still my good-to for "mainstream" games sites, but I go to Youtube and the like for most stuff now... but it'd be nice to see GS at least TRY to keep its fans happy, but they keep changing things for the worse imo.

Posted by hystavito

@nl_skipper: Something to remember, the fans, the type of people that write comments and such, probably aren't very important to Gamespot overall. It's such a big player in the market, I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of their traffic comes from people who aren't logged in or maybe even don't have an account. Probably also lots of people that don't actually visit Gamespot directly and browse it, they might watch a video or read a quick summary of an article from another site, or maybe click through but just close the window after they read/view that one piece. I think there's an media industry term for that, anyway, you get the idea.
