KATHMANDU, APR 19 - The Nepal Scene: Chronicles of Elizabeth Hawley (1988-2007), a two-volume set written by Elizabeth Hawley, is going to be launched at Dwarika Hotel, on April 20 at 3:30 pm. Edited by Lisa Choegyal and Mikel Dunham, the books have been published by Vajra Books.

Hawley, who is widely respected in the mountaineering world, is best known for her meticulously detailed and highly accurate documentation of numerous Himalayan expeditions. Born and raised in the US, Hawley first came to Nepal in 1960. In 1963, she got the opportunity to cover the first American expedition to Mount Everest for the Reuters news agency. The record-keeper of mountaineering ascents has also published her works in the form of The Himalayan Database.

Chronicles comprises month-by-month entries made by Hawley beginning before the 1990 Jana Andolan and ending a year shy of the historic 2008 election. Along the way, the two-volume set covers one of the most tumultuous phases in Nepali history, and examines events like the formation and abolishment of constitutional monarchy, the turmoil that led to the People’s War (1996-2006) and the 2001 Royal Massacre.

The set is available in both hardbound and deluxe leather editions.
