Capitals Sign Jonas Siegenthaler

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have signed defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler to a three-year, entry-level contract, senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today.

Siegenthaler, 18, was drafted by Washington in the second round, 57th overall, in the 2015 NHL Draft. The 6’2”, 220-pound defenseman was ranked 12th overall among European skaters by NHL Central Scouting. Siegenthaler registered three assists in 41 games with the Zurich Lions of the Swiss League in 2014-15 and led the team in penalty minutes (39). In 2012-13, Siegenthaler registered 14 points (2g, 12a) in 34 games for Zurich’s junior team to win the Swiss Elite Jr. A Championship and also helped the under-17 team to a title with two assists in five postseason contests.

The Zurich, Switzerland, native recorded four assists in seven games at the 2015 Under-18 World Championship with Switzerland and was named to the tournament all-star team. Siegenthaler also represented Switzerland at the 2015 World Junior Championship and the 2013 and 2014 Under-18 World Championships.

Siegenthaler is scheduled to join the Capitals for rookie camp prior to being loaned to Zurich for the 2015-16 season.
