Hipstamatic 300 Post Editing Showcase
So the big new feature in Hipstamatic 300 is post editing but is this a good thing or not? Lets find out with some shots of London along the way. As a reminder Hipstamatic 300 is currently in beta and it's set to be released next month.
Hipstamatic 300 Post Editing
Unlike my Hipstamatic 300 first photos all these images have been edited with the built in editing tools in Hipstamatic 300. The options are substantial, you can not only change the film, the lens, the flash and the ratio, a range of advanced editing tools are available as well. This includes straighten, exposure, fade, depth of field, texture, grain and the list goes on. Since Hipstamatic 300 always takes full resolution photos whatever ratio you pick initially, you can always change the ratio afterwards.
When editing a photo, if you tap and hold on the image for a second or two, you can see the original unprocessed image in the editor as well.
Downsides?
Is there a downside to these new found capabilities? It could be argued it takes away from what made Hipstamatic so special, that you had to give some thought into the shot beforehand but now you can change any element afterwards, it almost feels like cheating, which I know is ridiculous! Hipstamatic Oggl has post editing as well but Hipstamatic 300 has taken it a step further.
While I probably prefer what I can only describe the 'je ne sais quoi' of the no editing original, having post editing options are undeniable useful. A downside (or not!) could be tinkering with an image several times and each time getting further away from the original vision. This scene from Father Ted comes to mind!

Storage space and Image Capture
Another potential downside as well is storage space, your keeping multiple copies of an image, I went through a fair bit of space on my iPhone much more quickly that I was expecting. This does mean though you can revert to the original image, which is handy.
A thing I noticed on my Mac (10.8) with Image Capture, trying to offload some images from my iPhone, you only see the unprocessed images, which is awkward, as I can't get the final version of the image, which is what I am really after. The only way I have around this current is to Air Drop the photos to my iPad, which copies over the processed image.
Hipstamatic 300 Showcase
So I tried the editing features with this batch of photos to get a feel for them. The options that I alluded to already, are impressive, some of them are overkill if anything, with the tone curves option springing to mind.
I'll save this for another post but with Hipstamatic 300, I may eventually get ride of Oggl on my iPhone. Oggl becomes mostly unnecessary with Hipstamatic 300 assuming and extending most of Oggl's features.
Barbican
Three photos of a Barbican tower starting with the Savannah Lens with Queens West film and Triple Crown flash.
Lots of edit option used, to many to mention, same for the other photos here but Hipstamatic 300 does give you a nice summary after saving changes to an image, which is useful. Here is the summary for the above image as an example.
This time with the Muir lens and BlacKeys XF film plus the Triple Crown flash.
Finishing with Florence lens and Love 81 film.
London Wall
You can go for subtitle or completely change the look of an image with the Hipstamatic 300 editing features, making it almost unrecognisable if you want, whether this is a good thing or not is another matter. Here we have the Emma lens and the Otto film with the Triple Crown flash.
Tube platform
Finishing today with the Jack London lens and the Otoo film with the Triple Crown flash.
Hipstamatic 300 post editing is ...?
On the whole the Hipstamatic 300 post editing features are pretty great, I can imagine though having several versions of an image until I have settled on a particular one that works. I do almost prefer the simplicity of just taking the shot and letting that speak for itself. Now with post editing though you can change your mind afterwards, easily adjusting some aspect of the photo, without leaving Hipstamatic!
