Turkey signs co-operation deal with Qatar

30 March 2015

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed a law on 27 March that stipulates defence co-operation between Qatar and Turkey on military training and defence-industrial projects, but also covers the deployment of Turkish troops in Qatar if necessary. Qatar will also be deploying troops to Turkey.

A draft law to this end was approved on 19 March in the parliament with the backing of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) majority amid opposition criticism over the real motive behind the law.

Under the agreement Turkey and Qatar will also co-operate on military logistics, while mutually employing advisors at each others' military institutions and exchanging military personnel and equipment.
