There’s certainly several spots where Calgarians can find crepe creations.

But few likely compare — when it comes to the combination of culinary perfection and pretentious-free pricing — to Crepes & Cravings which has a little bit of both.

Located in a wee, hole-in-the-wall storefront along the Red Mile, I arrived early enough to snag one of a few tables and enjoy a tea and a summer breeze floating through the open door along with a steady parade of patrons making their way to the crepe counter.

To ensure I had good coverage of what the place has to offer, I summoned the company of a loyal friend more than happy to indulge in the interesting menu and we sampled a few savoury, breakfast-type crepes.

We began with the smoked salmon and cream cheese crepe, which has capers, red onions, tomatoes and a touch of dill.

That was followed by us fighting over the South of the Border (formerly, the Mexican crepe) which was, all by its lonesome, ample for a breakfast meal, given crepes are surprisingly and unexpected fluffy.

Mozzarella and cheddar cheese are melted in with lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, black beans, green onions and sour cream topped with a choice between regular or mango/peach salsa.

We opted for the latter, combining savoury and sweet in a single meal.

And we were not done.

Sadly, despite our bellies being filled beyond capacity — we couldn’t imagine leaving a single scrumptious bite behind — we shared a banana and strawberry crepe, which was amazing and served with whipping cream.

There are numerous items with Nutella for those who fancy chocolate.

And there’s gelato.

Brian Browning, who once was head of marketing for Calgary Transit, said he is “an entrepreneur at heart,” which is fortunate given he puts in about 15 hours a day and is clearly passionate about this wee, wonderful operation.

During the summer, he said homemade gelato (there are about 34 flavours) is more popular than the Crepes & Cravings namesake.

Salted caramel and chocolate Nero (made with pure cocoa and no dairy) are among the most popular.

Unfortunately, and for obvious reasons, I couldn’t indulge during my visit but will have to return to sample some myself.

Any suggestions for brunch reviews — crepes or no crepes — can be sent to my e-mail.
