Modeling and Simulation

IAI is a leader in the development of distributed simulations that emulate the behavior of physical systems and large complex networked systems. We support a wide range of clients that include NASA, Army, Navy Air Force, OSD, NOAA and NIH.

IAI’s modeling and simulation expertise lies in the areas of :

  • Aircraft and missile flight dynamics, flight trajectories, unmanned aircraft and ground vehicle performance and trajectory modeling.
  • Modeling and simulation of the behaviors and interactions of various entities of the National Airspace (NAS) such as controllers, command center, TRACONs, airports, NextGen Air Traffic Management (ATM) concepts such as airborne merging and spacing, dynamic airspaces, ground and flight deck-based interval management, and modeling of the NAS communication, navigation and surveillance infrastructures.
  • Human behavior modeling for applications such as crowd control, leadership and cultural training.
  • Communication and network modeling that includes RF channel modeling, transceiver modeling, antenna modeling, modeling of various network and routing protocols, and cyber thread modeling.
  • Agent-based highly scalable simulation for a wide range of applications that include ground and air traffic control, battle management and logistics.

Our Modeling and Simulation (M&S;) team has extensive expertise with a breadth of M&S; COTS software and tools including Matlab™, Mathematica, Labview, EMANE, CORE, NS-2, Qualnet, Opnet, OMG’s DDS AGI’s suite of tools, GOTS tools such as OneSAF, HLA, TENA, and NASA tools such as ACES, ATOS, MACS and FAA tools such as TARGETS and AEDT. IAI has also commercialized several modeling and simulation tools and infrastructures.

Some examples of our work include:

  • Modeling, simulation and analysis service for NASA, FAA and the Joint Planning and Development Organization (JPDO) for evaluation of next generation airspace concepts, and UAS operations in the NAS
  • Support for developing NAS-wide simulation and analysis capability for UAS communications, especially evaluation of RTCA compliant Control and Non-Payload Communication (CNPC) radio with ATC-Pilot communications using relay and non-relay architectures.
  • Support for NASA in the Airspace Concept Evaluation System (ACES) – a fast-time NAS-wide simulation system for NASA Ames, and .in the integration of two HITL simulation systems - Air Traffic Operating System (ATOS) and Multi-Aircraft Control System (MACS)
  • Development of LVC Frameworks for the Test and Evaluation of distributed teams of unmanned ground vehicles using IAI’s Distributed Control Framework (DCF), a modular and extensible software architecture that supports heterogeneous robot platforms and robust simulation with hardware in the loop integration.
  • Cross-layer Compose-able Network Simulation (CCNS) to evaluate the effectiveness of MANET application by composing TCP or UDP models for data transport, AODV or OLSR models for networking, and CSMA/CA, CDMA, or OLSR models for channel access.
  • Medical logistics simulation for the Navy to evaluate the effectiveness of the insertion of new medical technologies such as robotic triage based casualty evacuation into the battlefield. Our simulations integrate the next generation Tactical Medical Logistics (TML+) simulation with One Semi Automated Forces (OneSAF) using IAI’s Cybele-HLA (High Level Architecture) bridge.


Networks and Security (N&S;) Laboratory is equipped with an enterprise network test bed that can be used to reproduce a variety of scenarios for evaluating network protocols and security techniques. The test bed consists of an in-house OpenStack-based server cluster capable of managing 500+ virtual machines, seven production level switches, 50+ routers, 20+ PCs, 30+ laptops, six workspaces, and a variety of networking equipment supporting both Windows and Linux OSs. For wireless testing, N&S; lab has 100+ 802.11 type wireless nodes, 30+ 802.15.4 type wireless sensor nodes, and 10+ DARPA LANdroid robots that contain both 802.11-based radios and a full Linux OS. These wireless nodes can be connected either to IAI’s RF-Nest™ hardware, or in the case of the robots, programmed to move through the environment to play out a target scenario.

IAIs ATM Laboratory has tools and software that IAI develops, supports, or uses for applications including the modeling and simulation of the NAS, concept development and Airspace Design and Analysis tools. These tools include the Airspace Concepts Evaluation System (ACES), the Kinematic Trajectory Generator (KTG), the Terminal and Airport Surface Editor (TAASE), Aviation Environmental Design Toolkit (AEDT), a DoT Air Traffic Operations Simulation (ATOS), Multi Aircraft Control System (MACS); a NASA Ames HTIL Simulation product; IAI supports MACS/ATOS integration and TARGETS.

In addition, the Code Composer Studio is used for DSP programming. Using these tools we have developed an extensive library of VHDL blocks, softcore, and DSP interfaces for signal generation, acquisition, and processing.
