I had notes in my USBs with basic information such as a student number, phone number/tutor that the drive could be left with if found.

People checking this would then have a way to return my work to me in the event that I ever did lose it.

This is what someone needs to do.

A student will see a pen drive and either pick it up and check if it has return details in it, if not they have a free pen drive to take if they're so inclined.

You need to place these in universities, in libraries, anywhere where curious students may see it. They may get handed into lost property eventually but there's a higher chance of them being checked for their contents before that happens. This is also prime territory for changing opinions. If someone checks it for details, or has taken it home/somewhere with a computer to wipe it you already have the curiosity about the pen drive's contents and who it belongs to.

You could set up a return details note that has the password to the details folder, and how to go about unlocking it. That is the induction they need as to how the drive works.

Then you hit them with the content.

If this works well you're hitting them before they truly enter the world, and hopefully steering them away using their curiosity and capacity for learning.
