Book Review: ‘The Suffering of Innocents’ by Marc Zirogiannis

In The Suffering of Innocents, author Marc Zirogiannis considers the question pondered over the ages, stemming from the Old Testament’s Book of Job, “Why do innocents suffer?”

Sam and Laura Job are living the dream.  The two are college sweethearts, and after 25 years of marriage are still very much in love, with a passion for each other that has only grown over the years.  With three children, a beautiful home, and great careers, the Jobs have the perfect life.  Perfect, that is, until a split second tragedy changes their lives forever.

The Job’s endure pain and emotions that are unfathomable to most people, and it will take all of their strength, courage, patience, and most importantly, their faith to rebuild their lives.  The family’s relationships with each other are severely tested, which in turn, puts their relationships with God in question.  How could a loving God let such a horrific event happen to their family?  Indeed, why do innocents suffer?

Wow. Marc Zirogiannis crafts a stunning, heart-wrenching story in The Suffering of Innocents. The writing is magnificent.  The characters are well developed and realistic in their mannerisms and attitudes.  Zirogiannis captures the trauma and devastation suffered by the family to a tee.  My heart was aching, in several instances my eyes were watering, and I too, was internally asking the question, “Why?” to a God that seemed to be testing my own faith as I slowly became enmeshed with the family.

From the very first page I was hooked and I read the book in one sitting.  As this is a relatively short read, my only disappointment is that I wanted the story to continue.  I was left hungry, I wanted more.  I wish I could better express how deeply this story touched my heart, but bottom line is I absolutely loved this story and highly recommend The Suffering of Innocents by Marc Zirogiannis.
