Joe Biden meets with progressive senator Elizabeth Warren amid mounting pressure for him to run for president

  • Vice President was supposed to be in Delaware but came back to capital
  • Private meeting comes as Biden mulls running for president in 2016
  • Draft Biden super PAC is urging him to run, is already raising money

Vice President Joe Biden has met with Democratic senator Elizabeth Warren as he nears a decision about running for the White House.

The potential candidate, 72, was originally supposed to stay in Delaware this weekend but returned to Washington to meet with the progressive darling in his residence at the Naval Observatory.

Biden's team is expected to announce in September whether he is going to run.

Observers see the private meeting with Warren as an indication that he is looking to speak with other influential members of his party before making a decision.

'The vice president traveled last minute to Washington, D.C. for a private meeting and will be returning to Delaware,' Biden spokesman Kendra Barkoff told CNN, who first reported news of the meeting.

A person familiar with the situation also told the network that Biden had met with a group of advisers planning a campaign strategy at least once this week.

The movement to draft Biden into the race for the Democratic nomination has gained steam as front-runner Hillary Clinton's campaign has encountered difficulty.

Some Republican candidates for the presidency have suggested that the former Secretary of State will not be able to survive the campaign because of Justice Department probes into the handling of classified information on her private email server.

Recent polls have also showed socialist Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders cutting into Clinton's lead, with the underdog even topping her in early primary state New Hampshire.

Warren is seen as a candidate that those currently supporting Sanders instead of Clinton would like to see in the race.

The former Harvard Law School professor has been the target of campaigns drafting her to run for president as well, though she has said she's not running.

A group of those urging the vice president to run has already coalesced into the super PAC Draft Biden.

It has made a goal of raising $2.5million to $3million in the next six weeks, according to the Associated Press.

Aides for Biden are reportedly hoping that if he decides to run, Biden can make a splash at the first Democratic debate on October 13.

He previously ran for president in 1988 and 2008, bowing out of the race fairly early.

Biden has apparently given increased thought to a run for president after being urged to do so by his son Beau, who died of brain cancer earlier this year.
