Since ancient times the rivers and inland waterways have played a vital role in the social, political and economic development in China. The intensification of trade relations with Korea and Japan led to an increasing development of naval engineering especially during the Song Dynasty (960-1279). This need led to the construction of ships for off coast navigation.
The basic ship models were mainly three: the mayangzi, the shachuan and fuchuan. The evolution followed a «circular» development: the routes and the morphology of the seabed
conditioned shape and structure of the ships; the consequent emergence of more advanced boats led the Chinese to deal with new and more complex routes.
These boats, in fact, were the protagonists of 1400 km journey accomplished by the fleet of Kublai Khan in 1281 during the second invasion attempted of Japan. Although they were not suited to resist the violence of the typhoon which struck them along the coast of the archipelago, however, succeeded in their efforts to reach it. The defeat led to the need to build ships suitable for ocean travel and, learning from that experience, the Chinese produced those masterpieces which were the ships of Zheng He, who led China to learn about the African continent.
