Timing is everything when it comes to the success of a new technology. Get into the market too early and you will be faced with some tough choices on how to keep going until the market arrives. Get in too late and you have to invest heavily while hoping that you can catch some crumbs. History has proven that in each case it is highly unlikely that you will lead your market. However, timing a market is close to impossible so luck is probably the main factor to get the timing right.
The original Fortify Software team knows this more than most. In 2002 founder and CTO Roger Thornton had the genius vision that application security would be a very large component of the information security landscape. Along with his partners, Roger built the first set of real application security products for the enterprise and quickly defined Fortify as the market leader in this new technology sector. The company was successfully sold to HP in 2010 to become HP Fortify.

Ever since we deployed to our first customer in late 2013, there have been three consistent criteria that our customers consider when they are evaluating Prevoty or other RASP technologies:

In my role I am fortunate to have the opportunity to discuss application security with many security leaders. For larger enterprises, there is a common thread in these discussions that the toughest challenge related to application security is getting alignment between the “Builders” – those developing applications and features – and the “Defenders” – those in charge of ensuring application security. The costs in terms of time and resources of running a vulnerability management program are significant and application remediation efforts detract from the Builders main focus of releasing new software.
To our delight, Prevoty was shortlisted as a finalist for the Red Herring Top 100 North America. The award honors the most promising private technology "start-ups and scale ups" across the entire continent.
Since 1995, Red Herring has been analyzing scores of up-and-coming companies, shortlisting those who are gaining meaningful traction and capturing sizeable business opportunities in the fields of security, software, hardware, big data, life sciences, cloud, and more.

Last week we were fortunate enough to be a sponsor of the AppSec California conference (@AppSecCali) in Santa Monica, literally down the road from Prevoty HQ. First off, congrats to all the organizers and volunteers who put in a lot of work to make it a truly exceptional event.
After speaking to many delegates and other sponsors at the conference, I came to one simple but overwhelming conclusion: enterprise application security is set to truly break out in 2015.

We recently sponsored the 2014 Gartner Security and Risk Summit in National Harbor, Maryland, just outside Washington DC. This was a first for Prevoty, and it really felt like a la cour des grands [1] for our young company.
At the Summit, thousands of technology executives evaluate their security strategy (and shape their spending priorities). Hundreds of vendors test their value propositions and look for new product ideas based on delegate and analyst feedback.
Like many early stage companies, we are working with some the top analysts to better understand who we are in industry terms. Many of these analysts have asked us, “Who are your direct competitors”? I have always felt embarrassed by answering, “We have not really found any yet…but we are looking.”
Well, now we have the answer.

Talking with people in the industry at large, there is no question about the high level of admiration (and sometimes a bit of envy and angst) for what Amazon Web Services (AWS) has done to revolutionize the world of IT infrastructure. But I’m not sure everyone is aware of just how critical AWS has become to the startup world in particular.
