Is Calgary's Paul Brandt getting bad rap for cheeky new country tune?

Looks like that's a rap for Calgary country music star Paul Brandt and his new single “Get A Bed”.

This new song is Brandt’s cheeky response the “bro country” movement - which includes a rap verse by Canadian rapper Fresh IE - and has generated polarizing reaction from fans and a few radio stations.

“It has been pretty incredible,” said Brandt.

“This has been the most reactive single that we have ever had.”

The song is a commentary on country music today and the lyrics are focused on being a gentleman when it comes to pursuing women.

Brandt had even taken to social media to poll his fans on whether they were pro-rap or preferred their country music a more traditional way.

Polls closed on Tuesday morning and the rap version had wedged out the non-rap version by 20 per cent.

“Music is like candy – you should throw away the (w)rappers,” said Joy Reinders Steele, on Brandt’s Facebook page.

One the other side, some fans have gone on to say it “is the kind of respectable music we need more of these days.” (Audra Potter Chase on Facebook).

While representatives for Paul Brandt have said there were stations that have refused to play the song because the rap verse does not fit their format, Country 105 has fully embraced this new sound from Brandt.

“I like the message, it's not offensive,” said Scott Phillips, music director and on-air talent for Country 105.

When given the choice by the label to play the rap version or the non-rap version, Phillips said they will continue to play the rap version.

“Come on people, let your hair down and relax,” he said.
