Showalter and his assistants Rich Gray and Mike Jones took 12 members of the 2011-12 USA Basketball Developmental National Team to Cancun, Mexico, where they successfully defended the USA’s gold medal, rolled up a perfect 5-0 slate and qualified the U.S. for the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship.
No less than half the team posted scoring averages of 9.6 ppg. or more as the USA recorded a whopping 108.4 ppg. and outscored opponents by more than 42 points an outing.
Aaron Gordon led the way for the U.S., averaging team-highs of 17.0 ppg., tournament-bests of 11.0 rpg. and 3.2 bpg., while dishing out a tournament second-best 4.6 apg.; Jabari Parker, who was named the tournament MVP, averaged 15.4 ppg. and 6.4 rpg.; Jahlil Okafor contributed 14.6 ppg. and a team second-best 9.2 rpg.; Theo Pinson added 11.5 ppg.; Justin Jackson averaged 10.4 ppg.; and Kendrick Nunn chipped in 9.6 ppg. Further, Tyus Jones, who averaged 4.6 ppg., finished as the tournament assist leader after dishing out 5.6 apg.
Behind 27 points and 10 rebounds from Parker, the USA capitalized on a 22-3 second-quarter scoring spree to open play with a blazing 105-70 win over Brazil.
Parker again led the way for with a game-high 21 points as the USA struck down Argentina 102-81 in what would become the closest margin of victory for the red, white and blue in the tournament.
Conner Frankamp scored a team-high 22 points and Gordon barely missed out on a quadruple-double as the U.S. cruised past Costa Rica 118-46 to close preliminary play. Gordon filled the stat sheet with 18 points, 18 rebounds, a FIBA Americas U16 Championship record eight blocked shots and he, along with Frankamp, dished out a U16 tournament record nine assists.
Recording 22 points and eight rebounds, Gordon paced the U.S. as it conquered Canada 113-70 in medal semifinal action.
Two weeks of training and competition paid off in gold for the U.S., which earned a 104-64 victory over Argentina in the gold medal game. Gordon was the USA’s top scorer with 24 points on 11-of-15 shooting from the field and also was the top rebounder with 15.
Canada defeated Puerto Rico 86-65 for the bronze medal and FIBA Americas’ third and final slot for the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship.
