Steve Goodman, otherwise known as the king of the land of Hyperdub, has released details of his upcoming album, Nothing. It’s Goodman’s first full-length since 2011’s Black Sun, his first release since last year’s The Killing Season, and his first entirely solo full-length under the Kode9 name, as all of his previous recordings were in collaboration with The Spaceape, a.k.a., Stephen Gordon, who passed away last fall.
The album is of a piece with Goodman’s combinatory approach, throwing together “horror soundtracks, sampled library records, and j-pop” and popping up in “a no mans land between grime, early dubstep, and Chicago footwork.” With Gordon’s passing still so recent, it is not entirely without elements of his presence either. Although the LP is largely instrumental, there is a posthumous Spaceape performance found on “Third Ear Transmission,” and the album’s final track “Nothing Lasts Forever” is nine minutes of silence in Gordon’s honor.
Nothing is out November 6 on Hyperdub. Following the release of the album, Goodman will tour next year in support the album with the assistance of “simulation artist” Lawrence Lek. The performance will center around “an evacuated, fully automated, luxury hotel known as the “The Nøtel.” Details on that are forthcoming.

You’ve been getting flabby. I know it. Russell Haswell knows it. Everyone knows it. It’s just what happens when you only workout for 37 minutes once every six months. Your body’s not getting the activity the CDC says it needs, and you’re drooping. I wasn’t going to say anything, because I’m way too polite. But you know Russell, the scoundrel, he feels like it’s partly his fault anyway, what with his somewhat misleading workout/2014 album on Diagonal 37 Minute Workout, and so he’s back with another workout plan-cum-full-length entitled As Sure As Night Follows Day, which is maybe shorthand for its longer title If You Only Workout for 37 Minutes Once Every Six Months You Will Lose the Gains You Made in the Spring As Sure as Night Follows Day.
According to FACT, the LP is out September 19, again via Diagonal. Sonically, Haswell says it came together quickly and pulls from all over his career and sonic memory, ranging from “picnoleptic recollections of grindcore shows,” to “the refracted shades of mega-raves,” to “the conflating toxic texture-memories of early Japanese noise,” and the “incandescent stomp of Mills and Hood in that early 90s phase.” It’s available for pre-order via iTunes and Boomkat right now, and Diagonal has a posh LP edition planned, including a “rubbery” finish sleeve and a special-edition lighter featuring the album art.
“HARDWAX FLASHBACK” from the album is streaming below, and it’ll also be out as an accompanying 12-inch later this year that will also feature reworks of tracks by Autechre, DJ Stingray, and Powell.

If a member from Animal Collective takes a shit in the woods, a music news reporter may hear it and break “news” that the band is working on an album of wood shits. This time, though, the shit is real, as the fun-time boys have released a full-length live album, Live at 9:30, on Domino Records. You can order this 3xLP from Domino or the brand-new Animal Collective website and get the album from all digital platforms on September 4.
Recorded at historic Washington DC venue 9:30, the live album features a mix of extended Centipede Hz jams, reworks from Merriweather Post Pavilion, Strawberry Jam, Fall Be Kind, and Feels, as well as a cornucopia of smooth-ass transitions. This release luckily feeds the blood thirst of fans and Nightcrawler-esque music news reporters who await a new release, but in the meantime, you can catch Panda Bear finishing up his tour in support of Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper and the recently-released Crosswords EP.

After more than 25 years of confusing the heck out of anyone who dares turn up to a concert expecting to hear a run-of-the-mill jazz trio, Sydney mavericks The Necks are set to continue to push the trajectory of jazz out of the stratosphere of convention with their 17th record, Vertigo. Apparently the band set out “to pursue the idea of having a drone running from start to finish, off which we could hang ideas.” However, like all things The Necks attempt, they strayed off course and “ended up in a very different place from whatever our initial notion of it had been.”
So while The Necks, being the Antipodeans that they are, are very good at telling us what Vertigo is not, their label, Northern Spy, assures us that the album “is an eventful, kaleidoscopic tone poem set against a darkly shimmering background,” which consists of a single 44-minute piece.

We’ve been doing this and working on a Blu-ray to make this available. It should be coming out in the late fall. We’ve put a lot of work into all the images, transforming from our Kling Klang archives into 3D format and arranging it synchronized with the music, so it’s quite a lot of production. We’re quite a small team of musicians, technicians, computer programmers here at Kling Klang Studios; we do everything ourselves. That’s what we’ve been working in, and still are. When we travel to America, we’ll hopefully be finished with this work.
No more details at the moment, but LUCKY YOU if you didn’t already spend an emphatically NON-ROBOTIC arm and a leg on tickets to this heretofore-unique concert experience. Oh well… I guess I’d better start selling some shit now to save for the Blu-ray.
