Belval and Differdange

ArcelorMittal Luxembourg is a top producer of long products like beams and steel sheet piles that provide innovative solutions to the modern construction industry. Heavy Jumbo sections and high performance steel grades from ArcelorMittal in Differdange have a worldwide reputation for use in high rise buildings and save up to 40% of material weight (and accordingly CO2). Steel sheet piles from ArcelorMittal in Belval have achieved leadership in this market segment through high quality and reliability.

Belval
ArcelorMittal Belval (formerly known as ProfilArbed) is the world’s largest rolling mill of hot rolled steel sheet piles and has been playing a leading role in the development of piling technology for over 100 years. The first steel sheet piles were rolled in 1911 and 1912: the ‘Ransome’ and ‘Terre Rouge’ piles. Since then the production program of ArcelorMittal’s mill in Belval has undergone constant improvement and development to include U- with widths of up to 750 mm (AU) and and Z-piles up to 700 / 770 mm wide (AZ-700, AZ-770).

Reliable structures
ArcelorMittal’s piling series are especially suitable for building reliable structures rapidly and cost-effectively. They are characterised by excellent section modulus to weight ratios and high moments of inertia. Steel sheet piles are used worldwide for the construction of quays walls and breakwaters in harbours, locks, and for bank reinforcement on rivers and canals. Other applications are temporary cofferdams in land and in water, permanent bridge abutments, retaining walls for underpasses or underground car parks, impervious containment walls, etc.

Differdange
The Grey mill at ArcelorMittal Differdange holds several world records, including that for the first beam measuring one meter high (in 1911), the beam with the heaviest metric weight (1,370 kg/m) and the largest beam (1,100 x 400 mm). The “QST” or quenching and self tempering process has resulted in the production of a new generation of exceptionally high quality HISTAR® beams. Combining high yield strength with excellent toughness and welding properties, they have made Differdange famous throughout the world, and are used in the construction of drilling platforms and multi-storey buildings.

Grey mill beams are being used for the most prestigious projects currently under construction, including the Freedom Tower in New York and the World Financial Centre in Shanghai. ArcelorMittal Differdange also produces the biggest HZM sections to form the most competitive high modulus combined wall systems. The group offers comprehensive coverage of rolled products, including the European IPE and HE ranges, as well as profiles which comply with American, British and Japanese standards.

Production facilities
Belval consists of an electric arc furnace and a continuous caster steel shop. Its medium section rolling mill TMB produces light and medium sections. Its rolling mill 2 is specialised in sheet piles. Annual production capacity is 1 Million tons for the steelplant, 800,000 tons for the medium section mill and 600,000 tons for mill 2.

Differdange consists also of an electric arc furnace and a continuous caster steel shop. Its Grey rolling mill produces heavy sections - including Jumbo sections - as well as sheet piles. Annual production capacity of the steelplant is 1.35 million tonnes and of the Grey mill 700 000 tonnes.
