The most widely circulated Pearl origin story is that in 1985, local gallery director Thomas Augustine was quoted in a travel magazine as saying that the neighborhood’s industrial buildings were like crusty oysters, while the galleries and lofts inside were like pearls.
The legend was extended in 2002, when The Oregonian’s Margie Boulé tracked down Augustine, who emended his tale with the late-breaking news that he’d actually named the ’hood in honor of his friend Pearl Marie Amhara. Amhara supposedly threw such great warehouse parties that people started calling it “Pearl’s place” or “Pearl’s district.”

The Friends of the Pearl Foot Patrol kicked off its first walk on July 8 with some 20 volunteers gathering at Jamison Square. Representatives from the Police Bureau, Office of Neighborhood Involvement (ONI) and the Parks and Recreation Bureau were also on hand. Led by ONI’s Crime Prevention Coordinator, Mark Wells, volunteers donned their colorful yellow vests and did a walkthrough of the North Pearl. The group will soon schedule routine patrols throughout the District. Additional volunteers have already filled up the next training session scheduled later in July.
Initiated earlier this year by Friends of the Pearl, a subcommittee of the Pearl District Neighborhood Association’s Livability and Safety Committee, the patrol concept has garnered much interest in the community. A Neighborhood Watch program is also in the works over the coming months.

News Release from the Portland Bureau of Transportation The City of Portland Bureau of Transportation advises the traveling public that street improvements will require lane closures on NW Northrup Street from NW 14th Avenue to NW 23rd Avenue Monday, March 23 through Friday, April 3, 7 a.m. through 5 p.m. each work day. Crews are improving 1.37 lane miles of the street, grinding down old asphalt and preparing the street for repaving at a later date when weather permits. Parking will be removed during the project from NW 14th to 16th avenues to make way for work crews and through traffic. The Portland Streetcar will operate as usual. PBOT street improvement crews work through the winter, adjusting tasks based on weather conditions. Crews will grind down old asphalt and prepare street surfaces for paving even in cold or rainy conditions. They will return to complete paving during a window of dry weather. Streets with ground down surfaces are open for travel. Lane closures are only in effect during project hours. Access will be maintained for businesses and residents during the project. The traveling public is advised to expect delays while repairs are being made. We ask the public to travel cautiously, observe all lane closures and directions by flaggers, and use alternate routes if possible. All residents of the Pearl who wish to take an active part in assuring a safe and livable community, are invited to attend a Foot Patrol Training. Led by Mark Wells, Crime Prevention Coordinator from the Office of Neighborhood Involvement, the training will be held on Tuesday, April 14 at 6 pm at the Ecotrust Building, 2nd floor, on the corner of NW Johnson and 10th. As described by ONI, “A Foot Patrol is a trained group of volunteers organized to increase the safety and livability of their neighborhood. They walk their neighborhood streets, parks, or schools to deter crime and report incidents and problems, rather than sit back and hope that someone else will take care of any crime or livability problems. Foot Patrol members are actively and directly involved in solving those problems in a community-based, non-confrontational manner. Foot Patrols collaborate with the City's Crime Prevention Coordinators, police, neighborhood coalitions and associations, schools, parks personnel, and area businesses to help make sure that neighborhood problems receive a prompt and effective response. A Foot Patrol is a great way to meet like-minded people, contribute to your community, and get some exercise too!” Participation in Foot Patrols is created according to the availability of participants. Patrols might be scheduled once a week, every two weeks or once a month for a 45 minute to an hour walk with several neighbors. You are welcome to join with neighbors to help create a positive presence of caring in our community, have some fun and get some exercise at the same time!
