Sufganiyot Muffins for Hanukkah!
I was at the coffee shop next to my office a few days ago and they had doughnut muffins. If you’ve never had a doughnut muffin, you are seriously missing out. That lead to a whole train of thought, which ended in the idea of sufganiyot muffins for Hanukkah! I only discovered the sufganiyot a few years back. A local restaurant, owned by a cranky Jewish baker, would always have the delicious fried doughnut goodness. Then I stopped working in that area of town, so alas, no more sufganiyot for me. I also had to find a new place to get my challah, but that’s a different story.
A key aspect to the doughnut muffin is that it isn’t fried. Well, that ruins the whole Hanukkah tie-in. But, it is brushed with butter at the end before being coated in cinnamon sugar. To Hanukkahfy it, I added a dollop of sour cherry jam to the center and brushed the outside with olive oil, before coating it cinnamon sugar.
Must say, they’ve turned out delicious!

I also recommend you read their article about these muffins. It was a great refresher on baking techniques.
If anyone has a good history of the sufganiyot — please share! Is it just and excuse to eat doughnuts? I’m really okay with that, but I’m curious?
