Algerian Su-30MK order stokes Russian industry rivalry

17 September 2015

The 11 September announcement that Algeria has ordered another 14 Sukhoi Su-30MK-series multirole fighters promises to increase the rivalry between the factory that builds this version of the Russian fighter jet, Irkut, and the other major production centre for Sukhoi aircraft, the Komsomolsk-na-Amure Aviation Production Association (KnAAPO).

The Algerian order was announced by Sergei Chemezov, the general director of the Russian defence holding company Rostec, during the Russian Arms Expo 2015 (RAE 2015) show in Nizhny Tagil.

Algeria already has 44 Su-30MKAs that were ordered in two batches. The Algerian model is very similar to the Su-30MKI flown by the Indian Air Force, but with Russian- and French-made avionics and cockpit displays in place of the MKI's Israeli and Indian onboard systems.
