Leadership Development

Each year, the Feminist Leadership Fellowship Program supports and challenges 20 executive directors of women-centered nonprofits to build new and stronger networks to support their work, and develop a critical framework within which to address how topical issues affect both their long-term mission and day-to-day activities. The Policy Fellows program offers practical training in public affairs leadership for emerging leaders seeking new experiences and skills. Offered each fall through a competitive application process, the nine-month program offers a cohort of 40 diverse individuals the opportunity to learn such core leadership competencies as mindfulness, strategic effectiveness in context, and persuasion and collective action. Training

Faculty members and staff can design customized professional development programs for public sector and nonprofit organizations. These non-credit group training programs generally run for several weeks or months. Topics range from collaborative management to strategic planning to stakeholder analysis and public participation strategies. In 2007, the School’s Center for the Study of Politics and Governance launched the Program for Excellence in Election Administration to serve township, city, county, and state-level election staff, elected officials, county attorneys and auditors, and citizen leaders. Research into best practices is integrated into short-courses, on-line courses, seminars, conferences, and national forums addressing the key challenges facing election administrators and legislators setting election policy. The International Fellowship Programs bring international mid-career professionals and scholars committed to public service to the Humphrey Institute for professional enrichment, leadership development, and cultural exchange.
