Motorist sentenced to 80 lashes for drink driving

The family of the Muslim man, who was also handed a three-month jail term, has hired a legal firm to appeal the sentence. “His father came to us to know if there is something we can do to stop the punishment from taking place,” a legal source working on the case has said. “The Sharjah courts have made it clear – Muslims should not be caught drinking alcohol. If it is anyone else, the punishment is generally less severe,” the legal source added. The man is believed to have been drinking in a Sharjah hotel before he was stopped by police for driving erratically. The legal source said that lashes in Sharjah can either be performed in jail or at a special room in a government office. The family is hoping an appeal court will show leniency, but the man is believed to have a previous conviction for causing a traffic accident. The law firm believes that, if the flogging is carried out, the accused will be struck on the back, arms and legs. Eighty lashes is the standard amount for anyone sentenced to flogging in Sharjah and Ajman. In April, a Sharjah court sentenced a man to 80 lashes and two months in jail for drinking and threatening his mother with a kitchen knife.
