Santa Cruz Sentinel, Aug. 1, 2014: The Marine Mammal Center [...] has seen a record-breaking number of patients this year, with 727 admitted through July. In 2013, the center admitted 521 animals. There’s a large number of starving, young sea lions and an algal bloom in Monterey is making adult sea lions sick.
Santa Cruz Sentinel, July 23, 2014: ”We’ve had a record number this year in sea lion admits,” [Marine Mammal Center spokeswoman Laura Sherr] said. The majority of the ailing sea lions have been impacted by a neurological disease caused by large blooms of domoic acid, which is produced by algae. She said the center has also rescued an increasing number of stranded sea lion pups. [...]
KSBY, July 21, 2014: Two dead sea lions were found on the shores of Shell Beach Monday, but wildlife experts say this is not an uncommon sight. [...] Marine Mammal Center officials say there’s been a huge increase in the number of sick sea lions and seals [...]
San Luis Obispo Tribune, July 5, 2014: Sick seals treated at Morro Bay rescue center in record numbers [...] an unprecedented influx of sick seals at the Marine Mammal Center [...] suffering from either starvation or poisoning from toxic algae [...] “It’s been a perfect storm,” [Shawn Johnson, director of veterinary science] said. “We’ve been the busiest we’ve ever been at the center.” [...] This year, the center has rescued 658 seals [...] “We think it is a lack of food availability [...] We’ve been seeing a really high number of domoic acid cases” [...] On Saturday, two sea lions were being nursed [...] after suffering seizures [...] The reason for the large number of sick elephant seals is not known.
Stanford University, 2014: The new foe is domoic acid, a neurotoxin that can cause memory loss, tremors, convulsions and death [...] the sea lions develop a form of epilepsy [...] suffer brain damage [...] half are beyond help and have to be euthanized [...] Many more sea lions, as well as other sea animals, are believed to die in the open ocean of untreated seizures [...]
St. Petersburg Times, July 10, 2014: Sea Lion Population Vanishing in Russia’s Far East — The Steller sea lion [has seen a] mysterious population drop on Russia’s extreme eastern lands this year, researchers said. [They] established new reproductive rookeries [but] this summer, the number of new pups born at the rookeries was the lowest in more than 20 years [...] By the end of the sea lions’ reproductive season in early July, only 163 pups were born on the main colony [...] “The reasons for the sea lion population drop on the islands are unknown, and the decline in their number causes concern both among scientists who are studying it and among nature preserve employees,” the statement said.
KSBY, July 8, 2014: There has been a huge increase in the number of sick seals and sea lions on the Central Coast [...] this year, 346 mammals have been released and 271 have died. These numbers are already up from last year when 277 were released and 176 died. [...] they aren’t sure why that is happening [...] effects of domoic acid [...] could be related to [...] ocean pollution [...] “It has been extremely busy this year [...] We had a rescue this morning [...] head weaving, drool from the mouth,” says [Terry Greene, Marine Mammal Center.] “We’re not sure why that is happening [...] I don’t know if we have enough information at this time to determine exactly why [...] We help them [...] to try and reduce the number of seizures” >> Watch broadcast here

"Considerable recent research has been carried out by the Marine Mammal Center and other scientific centers on the association of domoic acid-producing harmful algal blooms and neurological damage in marine mammals of the Pacific Ocean.
Domoic acid can bioaccumulate in marine organisms such as shellfish, anchovies, and sardines that feed on the phytoplankton known to produce this toxin. DA can accumulate in high concentrations in the tissues of these plankton feeders when the toxic phytoplankton itself is high in concentration in the surrounding waters."

yes, and they never seem to be able correlate these events to the "ground zero" event, the grand daddy cause… the oceans have been warm before… algal blooms have occurred before
this has a catalyst that nobody of any "authority" is willing to discuss.

I don't understand the chemical processes first-hand, but Yoichi Shimatsu did comment that typhoons across Japan can be expected to get worse because radiation is increasing TEMPERATURES beneath the surface of the sea. Can anyone explain exactly why this is? Because it sounds like this may be a key factor with the algae blooms off the West Coast(?) Thanks.

Note the Michigan water crisis due to toxic algae bloom within lake eerie, as well as the massive sardine die off both occurring this week…
In my opinion a change in environment has occurred.
An irreversible one as either or: no one understands it? Or No one cares to admit what the catalyst is?…
We fail to accept and compartmentalize these events into sub categories. While ignoring the bigger picture as a whole.
The entire northern hemisphere has undergone an extensive, contaminative event.
The only surprises left, are the ones that we should be expecting (as the result of such catastrophes).
Famine, strangelets, die-offs, and extinctions.

The question is, have the phytoplankton been mutated to trigger a massive production of domoic acid under circumstances where it normally wouldn't be found? The people pooh poohing radiological contamination are not mentioning this as a possibility.
This bloom has been plaguing the coast for many months. Blooms don't usually last that long. It only takes one small variation to take hold and become the dominant that destroys the ecosystem like a row of dominoes.

We looked into this in the last volley of domoic acid related deaths. But its too much labor to reconstruct/remember the details. Essentially there are several different kinds of algae which, along with microbes and virus's, keep a balance.
The Domoic acid producing algae have an interesting tie to light cycles and minerals in the water, and this is where my memory is cloudy on details. But the non poisonous algae is the first to go leaving the place wide open for the algae from hell.
This kind of sea animal sickness was seen after Chernobyl as well. All they would have to do is take a large marine aquarium, add some radionuclides and see if the algae blooms, the plankton die and fall to the bottom, killing off sea stars, the little fish get poisoned, which would then affect the pelicans etc.
Something tells me Woods Hole will just keep asking civilians to collect specimens and send it in along with their donation money, and no body in all of the Universities of the world will make a test to see if adding mass quantities of radioactive poison has a poisonous effect…. what a strange psycho race the ratmen turned out to be

Maybe a weak EL Nino causing warmer waters encouraged the blooms but should end with the onset of winter as colder water creates the bust to basically hibernate until the next cycle.

Ok, since the mail-order degree experts can't seem to say the "secret word" then let me spell it out:
R-A-D-I-A-T-I-O-N…RADIATION…do scientists have trouble understanding the meaning of certain words? It must be beyond their mental comprehension to connect a severe nuclear meltdown in Japan which, is directly across the ocean to the West(then since they are to the East of that disaster)seeing the connection to the huge fish die-offs and animal genocides occurring in front of their very eyes!
These Einstein's cannot imagine the millions of tons of highly contaminated volumes of seawater poured into these melted cores for the last 3-1/2 years to cool the clumped cores…trillions of tons of seawater becomes polluted when the water is released…really.
Still don't get it do you, you science pinheads? No wonder your social skills suck. So let's use crayon-level reasoning that a 5 year-old uses:
1. If you poo and tinkle in the water that you get your food from and you swim in then, one day you will eat your food and it will taste like poo and when you swim you will smell like poo (when you come out of the water)…what do you think you shouldn't have done?
A 5 year old would figure it out.
But a scientist can't answer it because his "allowance money" or "science welfare check" would stop. So, science whores are of no value in the scheme of things because, they are all schemers and liars. Tisk, Tisk, Tisk….

Current State Of Collapse Of Pacific Ocean Ecosystem
http://www.dcclothesline.com/2014/07/30/millions-sea-creatures-dying-pacific-coast/
This article is a checklist which pulls together much of the bad news from the ongoing ecosystem collapse.
The entire ecosystem cannot sustain the loss of so many of its components all at once.
The tipping point occurred somewhere in the past.
It makes little difference who wins the argument over which stressor sent the ecosystem over the edge.
The fact remains that the Pacific Ocean Ecosystem has gone over the edge.

The acidification of the oceans is being cited as the cause of the die-offs. Certainly corals are affected because of their need to live off of calcium carbonate. Diatomaceous organisms in the oceans also need a Ph range that is high enough to form their microscopic exo-skeletons. The tipping point we have reached may be as a result of a perfect storm of many factors – radiation, acidification, increasing nitrogen fixation, heavy metals, plastics, sewage…. all the "good things" being dumped into the oceans by "civilization." There are other factors having to do with the magnetic pole reversal and ozone holes. Increasing cosmic radiation and ultraviolet light must be considered. Them we have chemtrails…. why would planes crisscross emitting visible trails. These cannot be contrails. Why would so many contrails be made worldwide? If there are that many planes, again, that alone would damage the biosphere.
The change in climate plus all of the above has caused an overgrowth of toxic algae species. All of this is aggravated by an overgrowth of toxic humans. The question becomes whether this is reversible, if not, the planet cannot support 7 billions humans.
Report comment
Socrates said: "The question becomes whether this is reversible, if not, the planet cannot support 7 billions humans."
Bingo!
Since human actions are part of a historic long-term disrespect and abuse of the environment for profit, and since there seem to be little attempt to reverse those destructive behaviors, it seems likely that the abuses, and the resulting ecosystem destruction, will continue.
It also is becoming clear that Earth cannot sustain a plague of 7 billion humans.
The question becomes how many humans can a severely degraded biosphere support?

Radiation that is artificial cannot be excreted from the body as the body has not adapted to radioactive cesium, as opposed to Potassium in bananas. Ionizing rsdiation reduces marine mammals' immunity to a virus known as cetacean moribillivirus.
The algae blooms are known as red tide. Toxic plankton comes in a thick mat doe to.rapid fertilization from land runoff or upwelling of nutrients from the deep ocean.
The fossil record shows die-offs from 10 million years ago of marine mammals. There might be "beachings" of large marine mammals where 4 distinct time periods are involved,at least in Chilean fossil beds that have been studied.
Geological origins are often implicated. Upwellings of currents reflect geological and climactic changes. Runoffs of nutrients before mankind exclude agriculture back then.
What we are seeing is toxic algae and probably a virus together with reduced immunity. That's my take.
The question is whether the ocean and foodweb can bounce back. Overpopulation and bad habits of humans make this virtually impossible.

Fossils show a thick mat due to….
The fossils of the die-offs has a red residue that was examined under a microscope. Hard to perform toxicology on fossils but the algae blooms can be deadly.
Overgrowths of candida albicans occur in the intestine and uro-genital tracts. Just think how the overgrowth of toxic algae could further pollute the ecosystem in the oceans.
