ABout Me

Hey guys, I'm Amanda Richards. I'm a writer based in New York City. I'm the senior content writer at a viral news and entertainment website, producing 20+ stories per day and gaining over 300 million individual views. I'm also a fashion & beauty features writer for Bustle, where I write about plus size clothing, beauty experimentation, and body positivity. You can learn more about my professional background on LinkedIn.

I started doing a bit of body positive social media blogging back in 2013, when I was still living in Seoul, South Korea. Through that, I've connected with a community of fashion-focused plus size women, body positive comrades, and a few big weirdos that I guess I like anyways. I started my site as a place to write critically about body positivity and feminism, but now I'm also focusing on plus size fashion and beauty.

On a personal level, I try not to take myself too seriously. When it comes to fashion, beauty, and lifestyle writing, I prefer to keep things transparent: In other words, I like to keep my content relatable, humorous, and totally transparent. My work reflects that, which means that even if you're a professional contact, at some point, you might read about my bowel movements. Sorry in advance.

Want to work together?

I'm based in NYC and am always open to new projects, writing, editing, or otherwise. If you're interested in collaborating on a project related to fashion, beauty, body positivity, sandwiches, or if you'd like to connect for a potential Bustle feature, contact me here

If you see me

When I was a kid, I compulsively stuck things in my ears to "hide" them. I've shoved in coins, Barbie shoes and accessories, and even a small head of broccoli. My left ear is completely useless as a result, you if you see me, please stand to the right.

My Style

My style rests somewhere between the wardrobe I want (minimal, monochrome, chic) and the wardrobe I can't help but buy (colorful, floral, and what my mom would describe as "just too much"). I love clothes and I change my mind often, which basically makes me the perfect shopper and the absolute worst financial planner. Plus size fashion is on the precipice of doing great things, and for once, it's kind of exciting to be fat when we're getting dressed. That's what I want my fashion writing to express.

My FaveS

My favorite major brands are ASOS Curve,  and Elvi, and sometimes I dabble in the realms of Forever 21+, eShakti, and Eloquii. I try to support smaller brands when I can, because plus size women who are making clothing while actually giving a shit about the consumer are the future of this industry, and everyone should have their backs. My favorites are Ready To Stare, Zelie For She, Re/Dress, MimuMaxi, and UrsaMajor+. If you're an indie plus designer, please get in touch with me - I am always down to support and write about new, independent, or just awesome brands.

The only thing I love as much as clothes are beauty products, and I'm totally down for experimenting with all of them. Seriously: I didn't even cringe when Kim K covered her face in blood (would do). I mostly write about beauty and all of its infinite products for Bustle, with an occasional blog post thrown in here or there. Here are some of the experiments and articles I've done.

Travel

Here's a look at some of my favorite images from trips, vacations, and time spent living abroad in Seoul.

From 2010 - 2015, I lived in Seoul, South Korea. I started off there like most expats: Being paid entirely too much to teach, a job that most of us were unqualified to do.  When I moved at 24, I was broke and weird and unsure and awkward and basically had no idea what the fuck I was doing in any situation. I made friends, had amazing students, and eventually got work as a writer.

Over the years, I traveled through east and southeast Asia, and also got to experience the joy of falling into a two-year long depression in a country where mental health is basically ignored. Still, it was pretty rad, you know, when I think about it.  I'm working on a collection of essays on my experiences there, but for now, you can see some photos. If you're traveling there any time soon, you can also peep my Gogobot travel guides to Seoul nightlife, culture, and food.
