SolarMobil Manipal to participate in Sasol Solar Challenge 2014 in South Africa

SolarMobil Manipal is a student project under the purview of Manipal Institute of Technology, comprising of 30 enthusiastic students from various engineering disciplines, with a mission of manufacturing India’s most efficient solar electric vehicle and demonstrate its reliability.

SolarMobil was started in the year 2011 with a vision of becoming a center for engineering innovations in the field of renewable energy. Our first success was the fabrication of “FREYR-1”, a single seater solar powered prototype vehicle. The prototype was highly appreciated and it has inspired us to work on a commercially feasible passenger vehicle – “SERVE”. The team showcased the “SERVE” concept on a national platform at Solarcon India 2013 in Bangalore.

After complete in-housedesign, fabrication, manufacturing and testing of the two seater, four wheeledvehicle – “SERVE”, we plan to present it at the International level by competing in the Sasol Solar Challenge 2014 in South Africa. The event is a biennial, 2000 km long race spread over two-weeks covering the length of South Africa and has found the backing of organizationslike International Solarcar Federation (ISF), FédérationInternationalede l'Automobile (FIA) and World Wildlife Fund (WWF).The challenge is a melting pot of budding engineers and industry stalwarts whoare vying for a cleaner and greener tomorrow.

A project of this stature requires immense technical knowledge, managerial skill & material resources and provides the engineers of tomorrow an exposure to the professional world. However, such a massive effort cannot be made without sound financial and in kind help. SolarMobil is seeking the financial support from Indian companies who can help & support them to achieve their aim. The companies who have sponsored them in the past and continue to do so include – MSME (Govt. of India), Tata Power Solar, Element 14, Altair Hyperworks, Agni Motors, Ewert Energy Systems and Technovision Tools.

By forming partnerships with industry leaders, SolarMobil expects to gain valuable knowledge and also necessary funding which is vital to the growth of their project. Initialives like these help us in our endeavor for a cleaner & greener planet and to bring about a solar revolution in the automobile industry.
