Getting a program started in your school is easy! Below are the program requirements:

• School administrator, athletic director and/or physical education teacher interested in running the program as part of a 2 week (minimum) in-school course.
   
• NASP archery equipment. The cost of the basic startup kit is currently ~$2500 and the cost may be covered by local donors or through an Iowa Archery in the Schools Foundation equipment grant (see grant information below). Equipment may also be checked out from the Iowa DNR (see checkout information below).  The basic kit contains 11 Genesis compound bows, 5 dozen arrows, 5 targets, 1 backstop net and one repair kit. • Basic Archery Instructor (BAI) training for NASP program leaders. This program is conducted through the DNR and provides training to the teachers who will teach the kids. This training is offered at no cost to school teachers leading 2 week in-school NASP programs. The cost is currently $40 for all others wishing to attend. Training takes one full day and is typically conducted in a school gymnasium.
   
• Certified Basic Archery Instructors lead the in-school course for a minimum of two weeks. The program is typically conducted in a gymnasium as part of a physical education class.
   
• Once certified, BAI instructors have the option of starting after-school clubs for students interested in shooting year round. Many schools recruit parent/volunteers in addition to school-staff help to run a competitive NASP program from December through the end of February.

NASP Archery Instructor Training:

National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) instructor training is offered through the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. The NASP course content is designed to teach archery instruction techniques to both archery novices as well as experienced archers. Course content includes range set up and safety, use of the string bow, eleven steps to archery success, coaching techniques, equipment nomenclature, inspection, operation, maintenance and repair.

Because NASP archery classes are conducted in school gymnasiums, teachers may volunteer their school to host a NASP archery instructor training course. Many of these courses are conducted during district in-service sessions.

Basic Archery Instructor (BAI)
The Basic Archery Instructor is an instructor certified to teach NASP-style archery to any beginning archer

Requirements:

• Be at least 18 years of age
• Attend the full day BAI course scheduled through the Iowa DNR
• Pass a written exam administered at the end of the training with a score of 80% or above
• Training material cost is $40. Cost is paid by the DNR for Iowa School teachers conducting in-school NASP programs

In addition to the training criteria above, all participants must pass a criminal background check conducted through the DNR. All personal information will remain confidential.

NASP Certification and Workshop Dates
Current training schedule and registration materials are available through NASP National . Any applicable program fees should be paid via check or money order made out to " IBA" and brought to the class. Pre-registration through naspbai.org is required. NASP Equipment Checkout Program
Checkout equipment may be reserved through the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.  There are several equipment kits available for checkout (up to 4 weeks/semester) by schools and other groups with NASP BAI certified instructors.  Checkout will be on a first-come, first-served basis and it is recommended to reserve equipment at least 6 weeks in advance of the start of your archery unit.  The checkout program works as follows:

• Schools/groups checking out the equipment must do so in the name of a NASP Basic Archery Instructor (BAI) certified instructor and have BAI instructors leading the course
• Equipment is available on a first-come, first served basis
• Checkout time frame will be a maximum of 4 consecutive weeks
• Equipment kit will contain the following items:
  • 11 Genesis bows (9 right-hand, 2 left-hand)
  • 5 dozen Easton 1820 aluminum arrows
  • 5 targets
  • 1 10’x30’ backstop net
  • 12 floor quivers
  • Bow rack
• Cost schedule is as follows:
  • Schools using the equipment as part of the in-school curriculum
    • First time is free
    • Second and all subsequent times is $250
  • Non-school or after school groups checkout fee is $500
    (Many local civic and/or conservation organizations may be willing to help with these costs)
• You provide DNR with delivery date, pickup date and physical shipping address and the equipment will come to, and be picked up at your school/facility
• A post-checkout survey of participation is required to be completed within two weeks of completion of the archery unit

NASP Equipment Grants:
IBA NASP Foundation Grant
As of May 1, 2015 the Iowa Archery in the Schools Foundation equipment grant program through the Iowa Bowhunters Association has been discontinued.

NASP/Easton Foundation Grant
Grant Information in pending for 2015/2016 year.  Grant information is announced to Iowa NASP Coordinator, Donise Petersen, typically in August or September.   Grants are given on a first come first serve basis.

Protocol for 2014-2015 NASP/ Easton Foundation Equipment Grants
$6000 allocated per state with $750 grant maximum to schools who order the full equipment kit.
    up to $2000 can be allocated to existing schools but giving up to $200 per school if they order $800 in replacement items.
Funds must be allocated by December 31st.
