Hangzhou of China welcomes the world for 2018

Almost to tears, Luo Xuejuan, the 2004 Olympic gold medallist in the 100m breaststroke, was too excited when she witnessed her hometown Hangzhou, China win the bid of the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) and the FINA World Aquatics Convention in 2018, beating Lima (PER) and UAE.

"When I was an athlete, my dream was to compete in major international swimming events in China. I'm really proud of my hometown and I'll strive for promoting this championships," Luo, who acted as an ambassador for the successful bid, said.


The FINA President Dr. Julio C. Maglione, in the Press Conference announced the FINA Bureau decision one day earlier to the Doha 2014 FINA World Swimming Championships (25m). Maglione explained: "China is an important partner of FINA and we are always happy to return to this beautiful country. Hangzhou is sport city with good facilities, which will guarantee the success. There are tremendous swimming fans in Hangzhou, which is important, they are the future of swimming."

The Mayor of Hangzhou Municipal Government and the chair of Hangzhou delegation, Zhang Hongming said: "Hangzhou is a city of swimming, and many Chinese swimming champions were born here. The World Championships (25m) will appeal elites worldwide, which will promote swimming here in Hangzhou, China, and also worldwide. "

Located in China's most developed east coastal area, Hangzhou is 167 km away from Shanghai. Hangzhou is known as Zhejiang provincial capital.

Gymnasium and Aquatic Center of Hangzhou Olympic and International Expo Center will be the competition swimming pool for FINA 2018 World Swimming Championships (25m). They are located in the connecting band of Hangzhou Binjiang and Xiaoshan Administrative Districts, close to beautiful south bank of Qiantang River, and thus form a new urban scenery with Qianjiang New Town across the river.
