Christine Blower

General Secretary, National Union of Teachers

Since 2009, Christine Blower has been general secretary of the National Union of Teachers, representing qualified teachers across England and Wales. Bilateral school-educated Blower grew up just outside London and trained as a teacher, teaching at various schools in the south. In 1990 she began working with at-risk young teenagers before becoming a member of the Behavioural Support Team in Hammersmith and Fulham. Having joined the National Union of Teachers at the start of her teaching career, Blower held various posts in the West London association, and was elected to the National Executive of the NUT between 1992 and 2000, becoming national president from 1997 to 1998. The first woman general secretary, Blower has criticised the ability of the free schools to employ teachers without qualified teacher status.
