Church of Scotland Wedding Ceremony
The Church of Scotland permits marriages to take place anywhere so long as the minister agrees, the location has a proper address and the couple give notice in the venue's district.
There are no residency requirements; couples may marry in any church or register office that they choose.
A religious ceremony must be solemnised by a person authorised to perform marriages under the Marriage (Scotland) Act 1977.
Notice forms must be submitted to the registrar in the district in which the marriage is to take place.
Notice must be given up to three months in advance of the wedding and at least 15 days before the wedding
The couple must supply relevant personal documentation to the registrar, including birth certificates, decree of divorce etc. The registrar will advise on what is required.
The registrar will then draw up a Marriage Schedule - no marriage can happen without this document.
Straight after the ceremony, the Marriage Schedule is signed, in black ink, by the newly-weds, the person conducting the wedding and two witnesses.
The registrar then registers the marriage and marriage certificates are issued.
