The area's architecture and proximity to USC have brought many upper-middle-class whites as well.

Just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to,doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have. Do you understand?

That is wonderful and interesting to know that there is a black gay NEIGHBORHOOD. I hear and read about the black gay COMMUNITY but no NEIGHBORHOOD. West Adam should elect a black gay or black lesbian councilman or councilwoman to represent District 10. Since West Adam is predominantly black gay and lesbian, the citizens of that district need to get politically involved and form an allegiance to keep it black and gay. This will give us all a sense of pride in having our own haven. West Adam can now be a rest haven for all black gay and lesbians

I've been living in Inkser, MI for the past 3yrs now, but I was raised in L A. on Rimpau off of Washington and as an adult lived in the Valley (Lakeview Terrace, North Hollywood/Valley Village). I've alway knew the history of West Adams, but did not know it was "the Black Gay Mecca".

Great post but for the record Wilshire Vista is a relatively small neighborhood. Borders are San Vicente/Pico (North and South), and Fairfax and Hauser (West and East). In typical LA fashion, when met with a little succes surrounding neighborhood (RE Agents) are not trying to mooch off of the name.

Now let's get some more family establishments in WeAd.

I appreciate your sentiment, but Jewel's Catch One isn't in West Adams. It's in Mid-City or perhaps even "Wilshire Vista."

I'm on the extreme west end of West Adams (near Washington/Redondo). I would agree that West Adams has a strong black and ethnic gay community. The problem is that "West Adams" is considered so large, that it doesn't reflect the diversity of the district itself. In my particular area, I see many white and mixed-race gay couples (yours truly) begin to buy homes in Mid City West who've been priced-out of Miracle Mile and Wilshire Vista. Closer to USC, the gay-vibe is more youth/urban/scholastic and very strong on-line. But I also see a lot of black and latina lesbians choosing to raise their families. What would be nice is for an ethnically diverse, gay-friendly "strip" develop in one of the areas. Pico in the areas of Jewel's Catch One would be most obvious. But there are also great opportunities for Washington around the Nate Holden Theatre.

Nice observation. Has it always been a mecca and you just noticed or is that new?

Really on a different topic - You state: The area's architecture and proximity to USC have brought many upper-middle-class whites as well. WE CALL THAT GENTRIFICATION. - is this a bad thing or are you just pointing it out that whites have moved back into the area? The neighborhood seems diverse and people seem happy about living together.

It's a great area with a wide variety of beautiful homes and homes that could be beautiful once again. The hubby and I have often talked of wanting to live there, especially when he worked at USC.
