VANCOUVER — The Stanley Cup riot investigation is coming to a close as the last two suspects have been charged with taking part in the hockey riots three years ago. But police say they will continue to follow up on any tips about unidentified rioters.

Tak Leng Daniel Lee has been charged with three offences, including taking part in a riot, mischief, and assault with a weapon on a peace officer, the Criminal Justice Branch said Thursday.

Jesse Ronald Opper has been charged with two counts of mischief, taking part in a riot, and having his face concealed with a mask.

The branch said a total of 887 criminal charges have been approved against 300 suspects. Of those, 274 pleaded guilty, including all young people charged. Vancouver police note, however, that there was one man not included in the Crown’s tally, making the number charged 301. That suspect, Karanvir Singh Saran, was arrested by Surrey RCMP one day after the riots and charged with stolen property. He pleaded guilty and was discharged.

Vancouver police said in June there were only two more suspects left to prosecute; however VPD spokesman Const. Brian Montague said Thursday that the investigation remains open for now.

"As there are still unidentified individuals that played a criminal role in the riot, investigators will follow-up on any tips we receive regardless of when information is provided. If that follow-up leads to evidence to support a criminal charge then a report recommending charges would be prepared for Crown," he said, in an email.

The riot broke out in June 2011 in the downtown core of Vancouver after the Boston Bruins beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-0 in game seven of the Stanley Cup Final.

More than 100 people were injured during the incident when crowds of disgruntled hockey fans smashed windows, looted businesses and set cars on fire, including two police vehicles. Riot police fired tear gas, and used batons and pepper spray in an attempt to control the angry mob.

The riots upset people across the country, which led to a Facebook campaign to help police identify the culprits.
