Reader
Readers are professional officiants in a synagogue (sometimes called ‘minister’, although this archaic term is rarely used nowadays). They lead the services.
Readers are addressed and referred to in speech as ‘Mr/Mrs/ Miss Golden’, or ‘Dr Golden’, as appropriate. An envelope should be addressed to ‘The Rev Joseph Golden’, for example, or ‘The Rev Dr Joseph Golden’, as appropriate.
There are two styles of address for members of the Jewish Synagogue: formal and contemporary. In most circumstances the social form is used.
The recommended style of address is as follows:
Beginning of letter | Dear Sir or Reverend Sir (formal) or Dear Mr Cohen (social) |
Envelope | The Reverend Joseph Cohen |
Description in conversation | Mr Cohen |
Verbal address | Mr Cohen |
