Andy Cowell

Managing Director, Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains

Andy Cowell has held the enviable role of managing director of Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains since 2013. After graduating from Lancaster University, Andy joined Cosworth Racing Ltd. After a year spent with BMW Motorsport, Andy returned to Cosworth as principal engineer for F1 design and development.  He joined Mercedes-Ilmor in 2004 and went on to become chief engineer on the V8 project before taking on responsibility for the technical and programme leadership of all engine projects, including the KERS hybrid, which made its race debut in 2009.  Andy was engineering and programme director for Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines from July 2008 – December 2012.  Since January 2013, Andy has been managing director of Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains Ltd. He won the 2013 James Clayton Prize, for his outstanding contributions to engine design and development in Formula One, especially V10, V8 and the new V6 with Hybrid Energy Recovery System and his inspirational leadership at Mercedes-Benz.
