General Sir Nicholas Houghton, GCB, CBE

Chief of Defence Staff

General Sir Nicholas Houghton, chief of the defence staff, is the UK’s most senior military leader. For the British military, 2014 was a significant year: in addition to the anniversary of World War I, 2014 signalled the end to Britain’s 13-year war in Afghanistan, in which Houghton played an instrumental role, denying Afghanistan as a refuge for terrorism and simultaneously preserving peace on the streets of the UK. Houghton has raised key concerns about the armed forces’ abilities with the recent cuts to military spending and personnel, pushing for investment that will preserve the UK’s position as a military superpower.
