Equestrian
June 2016Hickstead Derby Meeting
Hickstead, founded in 1960, is synonymous with British show-jumping. This iconic British jumping derby is a demanding test of both horse and rider, and is the eagerly-awaited culmination of four days of equestrian events.
The course is famously challenging. Most of the jumps are over 5 ft high, but there are also daunting doubles, the notorious Devil's Dyke (a tall triple jump which has seen many a fall) and the Derby Bank, where horses have to negotiate a sheer drop of 10 ft 6 in.
Trade exhibitors and a children's funfair will provide distractions if needed, but most spectators will be glued to the thrilling action on the course, or rubbing shoulders with some of the stars of British show-jumping - Nick Skelton, Geoff Billington, John and Michael Whitaker.
Situated in the heart of the Sussex countryside, midway between Gatwick Airport and Brighton, Hickstead is easily accessible from the A23.
