DigitalSilo, VideoSilo, and MPEG Nation

Why these folks don’t consolidate their web sites and come up with a single name, I don’t know, but their services look great. I’d be curious if anyone reading this has experience with them.

DigitalSilo offers low cost conversion from film and video tape to DVD, and QuickTime, Real, and MPEG formats, as well as public and secured online storage. Subscribers pay $9.95 per year to store up to 240 hours of video online. Video tapes and film can be shipped to their facility for digitization, which costs $44.95 per hour of video (Betamax, UMatic, VHS, VHS-C, SVHS, Video8, Hi8, Digital8, miniDV, MicroMV), $249 per hour of 8mm and $339 per hour of 16mm film. VideoSilo has a slightly different pricing structure, and focuses on converting home videos to DVD. DigitalSilo also has a division called MPEG Nation, which converts .avi, .mov, .mp4, .wmv, .asf, .dv, .mpg, .rm, and .mp2 into low, medium, and high-res Real, Windows Media, and Quicktime streaming and download formats.

    DO NOT USE VIDEOSILO!!!!.

I was looking for a place to convert my 5 very old and priceless BetaMax tapes to DVD. After some analysis I finaly decided to go with VideoSilo because I though that the process was very straighforward. After sending them the tapes on November 9th, it was supposed to be ready on 5 business days or the money back. Well… that is a nice catch phrase, but it is just a complete lie. I send them many emails and, just when I though my tapes lost, they finally reply after two months and a half.

I though that they had a good explanation for the delay. All they told me was that because two of the tapes were over 2 hours they needed to charge me an extra $60. THEY DID TRY TO CHARGE THE CREDIT CARD AGAIN WITHOUT MY PERMISSION BUT MY CREDIT CARD DECLINED THE CHARGE. They said that all I had to do is pay the $60 and they would send me the tapes. After some fighting back they finally kept their ground and didn’t care and I relented since those tapes are priceless to me.

All they said was that they could charge anything they want because it was on the terms of service and that they sent an email (that I never received) about it. The worst part is… they DIDN’T have the TERMS OF SERVICE anywhere on their site or during the purchase.

Attached is the set of emails I had with them back and forth so you can read it by yourselves:

I don’t know where you get your training but Email is NOT secure. I am extremely UNHAPPY with your service. It is the WORST experience I have had EVER with any company on my life.
I will pay the $60 because those videos are too valuable for me not to. I am sure this lack of customer service and terrible processes will cost you more than the $60 tough.

Let’s hope that after paying the $60 you actually send me the videos and don’t find any other excuse to charge me more and not to send them to me.

    Hello,
Thanks for your email. We apologize for the mis-understanding, however per our terms of service, additional DVDs were created for you, since your tape was longer than 2 hours in length. We will need payment for those DVDs before we can return your order.
    Thanks,

I am not getting response on this since last Friday…
That is fine now. But at the time I made my order there was no mention of an extra charge anywhere.
I could have gone at that time to another company or site and they have most likely been honest with their pricing structure with no hidden charges anywhere.
Even if you DO charge extra for tapes with more than 2 hours I was never informed and it was (or IS) never explicit on your page or the FAQ or anywhere for that matter. I shouldn’t be charge with it. Should I known that, I probably would have never gone with you on the first place.
I wanted to add to this email that I tried to find your terms of Service where you say: “Per our terms of service, we can charge your credit card for any additional conversion charges that may result from your conversion.” I couldn’s find it anywhere on your page.
Is there anybody I can speak by phone to solve this issue?

    Hello,
Thanks for your email. Due to an equipment change in 2007, we no longer record more than 2 hours of each tape. However, prior to the New Year, we would record your entire tape, and charge for any additional charges longer than 2 hours.
    Thanks,

Even on the possibility that the email you sent went to the Junk Mail, and that I didn’t read your terms of service that contains that extra charge with no previous approval.
Your web site states on the FAQ:
    http://www.videosilo.com/videosilo/faq.rsc#14
    12) Are there any minimum or maximum restrictions on the total length of my videos?
No, you can send as many or as few tapes as you’d like.
There are NO restrictions on the length of the videos. And there is NOWHERE a place where it says extra charges are made on videos with more than 2 hours long.
    Thanks

Again, we can ship this order to you right away, however we do need payment for the extra charges.

How come after two months I have never received an email about it? And not only that, but you tried to charge my credit card a second time without my consent.
Added to that is the statement on your website that shows:
Now Even Faster… All Orders Completed in 5 Business Days, or Your Money Back!
The way I see it, I not only DON’T have to pay the extra $60 but I could ALSO ask for my money back because of the two months and the bad service.
Can you please send me a phone number to talk to a supervisor or a manager that actually cares for the customers? Or just send me the dvds and the tapes and finish this two months long anguish and bad experience.

Thanks for your email. We show that your order was completed 2 months ago, however an extra charge of $59.90 was declined on your credit card, for Part Two creation of Tapes 3 & 4, which were over 2 hours long. Please provide us with credit card information for the charge of $59.90, and we can get your completed order sent to you via FedEx.

This is another of the many emails I have sent. You have received the tapes on November and I still haven’t received any DVD or response back from you on the status of my tapes.
Please respond or send me the tapes back and return my money so I can go with somebody else.
I am very unhappy with the service.

They are a scam. Have sent 2 tapes and got nothing back. their email address is bogus (it always comes back to me as undeliverable) and for their phone? there is no answer, just an aswer machine. they just disapear with your tapes and money. BTW, if anyone can trace them by their phone please let me know (a anonimous cop maybe?), since it’s unlisted. Thanks

  4. Giovana Says:

I have actually received my tapes and dvds back and the quality is great. Costumer service is still not the best, my emails only get back to me when I sent to their address and after trying to reach them I was contacted only once by them to let me know they didn’t like my previous comments here, which I apologized for calling them a scam and so on. however that email also returned to me as undeliverable, and the lady that contacted me (Cindy) didn’t provide her last name, or her own email or number to reach her.

  5. VideoSiloSucks Says:

Videosilo is TERRIBLE! DO NOT SEND THEM ANYTHING! THEY WILL TAKE YOUR MONEY AND YOU WILL NEVER SEE YOUR VIDEOS AGAIN!!!
If you have sent them materials that haven’t been returned, post here so some of these stories can be collected.
