140th Anniversary Vicksburg Riots Symposium

Vicksburg, MS –On Saturday, December 6 and Sunday, December 7 Vicksburg National Military Park is partnering with the Friends of Vicksburg National Military Park and Campaign, and the Jaqueline House African American Museum to host programs on the Vicksburg Riots of 1874.

On Saturday, December 6 from 8:30 am to 5 pm there will be a symposium featuring Yoland Robbins of the Jaqueline House speaking about Vicksburg Troubles, Local Memories, Dr. Brooks D. Simpson of Arizona State University speaking about The President and the Governor: Ulysses S. Grant, Adelbert Ames, Reconstruction, 1874-1875, Dr. Ronald L.F. Davis of California State University-Northridge speaking about Reconstruction and the African American Perspective, Dr. Deidre Cooper Owens of Queens College speaking about The Experiences of the Newly Freed in Mississippi, 1874-1875, and Prof. Nicholas Lemann of Columbia University speaking about The Vicksburg Riots. The final speaker in the afternoon will be followed by a panel discussion including the speakers and park staff. The symposium will be hosted by Reverend Arnita Spencer and Bethel A.M.E. Church in Vicksburg and will be free of charge.

On Sunday, December 7 at 1 pm on the 140th Anniversary of the Vicksburg Riots there will be an interpretive program followed by a wreath laying near one of the locations where the incidents occurred. This program will take place inside Vicksburg National Military Park.

Park hours are 8am to 5pm daily with the U.S.S. Cairo Museum opening at 8:30am.
