Established in 1970, Art Basel is the world's most prestigious art show, exhibiting both modern and contemporary works. The show features work from nearly 300 galleries worldwide, and over 2,500 artists are represented - from established stars to the emerging generation.
The exhibition at the Basel art fair features art in a wide range of media - paintings, drawing, sculptures, installations, photographs.
Around 65,000 people attend the fair, with visitors including professionals - gallery owners, art dealers, collectors, and curators - as well as art enthusiasts.
The show takes place in Halls 1 and 2 of Messe Basel. The Swiss architect Theo Hotz built Hall 1 in 1999, while Hall 2 is a landmark building from the 1950s.
The show also acts as an effective showcase for the picturesque medieval city of Basel. Richly endowed with premier museums, parks, theatres and concert halls, Basel is the ideal cultural venue for art-lovers. It boasts some 40 museums, most of them located in the easily accessible lanes and alleyways of the Old Town. Situated on the River Rhine, the city forms a pleasing backdrop to the banquet of high culture.
