THE Labour Party’s Chewe Munkonge was elected as the new city councillor for Quarry and Risinghurst following yesterday’s by-election in the ward.
Mr Munkonge won 782 votes to secure victory, with his nearest challenger, Roz Smith of the Liberal Democrats, polling 615.
Katharine Harborne of the Conservative Party won 222 votes, Liz Taylor of the Green Party came fourth with 186 and English Democrats candidate Julia Gasper was last with 43.
The by-election was triggered by the resignation of Labour councillor Laurence Baxter, who has moved to work in the Czech Republic.

So the Liberals will have to find another reason to moan...
One of the remaining Liberal councillors took to twitter to complain that people voting Green "obstructed a Lab defeat" - ie it's because people didn't vote Liberal they didn't get elected.
Well done for working that out Councillor!

Didn't they want the 43 Gasper votes too?

Would you want the votes of people who voted for the English Democrats and their candidate?

I assume that he is comparing this to the Carfax by-election. The diference is that students make up the majority of electors there.
In May Alex Hollingsworth stood in Carfax and was defeated by the Greens. He stood again in August and was elected on an 8% turnout. That's a bit like being elected in an eighteenth century rotten borough.

Lovely bloke, the only candidate to actually visit my house & have a chat. (and he has a Star Wars name) :)

Nobody has yet mentioned that Roz Smith, the Liberal Democrat, increased her vote considerably since she stood in the same ward last May, despite a drop in the overall turnout, and she is chipping away at Labour's majority here.
