BRIGGS Loretta Rose Briggs Coleman

87, of LeRaysville died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre.  Loretta was born March 17, 1925, in Wellsboro, Pa., a daughter of Harry and Mertelle Stevens Briggs. Loretta's father died when she was 10, and a few years later the family moved to LeRaysville, her mother's hometown. Her mother then married Harold Brister of LeRaysville.  Loretta graduated from LeRaysville High School in 1943, finishing a half-year early to start college in a war-time program to bring teachers into the work force quickly. She graduated from Mansfield State Teachers' College in 1947, again missing her own graduation because she was already holding a teaching position.  On Aug. 27, 1952, she married Frederick Arno Coleman of LeRaysville in State College, Pa. They had a 57-year marriage.  From the mid-1940s to the late 1950s, Loretta taught math and science in the Greens Landing, LeRaysville, Hartwick, N.Y., Montrose and Northeast Bradford high schools. She left her teaching career, however, to selflessly help her family. For approximately 50 years, she cared for family members, including her father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Mary Coleman; her disabled son, Jimmy, for more than 45 years; her own mother; and her husband and daughter; as well as other relatives, all while tending her home.  A kind and compassionate person often described simply as "sweet," she was always concerned about others, frequently sending greeting cards and praying for those facing problems. She never wanted people to inconvenience themselves for her. A woman of Christian faith, she showed great patience and tremendous internal strength and had a practical, realistic side. She also had a great sense of humor and an inquisitive mind. She endured and survived several health problems in recent years remarkably well.  Loretta attended the Neath Welsh Congregational Church and was a member of LeRaysville Chapter 498, Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed flowers, shopping, eating out and reading. In recent years, she divided her time between her own home and that of her daughter.  Loretta is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Ken Sharer of Laceyville (Stevens Township); sisters and brother-in-law, Harriett and Cart Roof of Standing Stone and Betty Mallow of the Personal Care Home of Memorial Hospital, Towanda; her stepsister and her husband, Florence (Brister) and Steve Webb of Advance, N.C.; nieces and nephews, Gene Beers, Cynthia Aeppli, Dan Webb, Diane Webb and Darlene Cary and their families; her son-in-law's relatives, the Sharers, Campbells, Newtons and their families, whom she also loved; and many friends.  She was predeceased by her husband, Frederick Arno, in 2010; son, Jimmy, in 2010; an infant daughter, Mary, in 1960; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, William and Thelma Coleman, in 2003; a brother-in-law, Golden Mallow in 1995; and her parents.  Family and friends are invited to attend a period of visitation and time of sharing memories from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, March 10, at the Neath Welsh Congregational Church. A memorial service and celebration of Loretta's life will follow at 3 p.m. with Pastor Paul Blasko officiating.  A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in the Rushville Cemetery with Pastor Tom Burlington officiating.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to any of several local organizations: the Northeast Bradford Education Foundation, in care of Martha Young, 747 East St., LeRaysville, PA 18829; the Northeast Bradford Student Loan Fund, c/o Bob Moore, 1071 Main St., PO Box 99, LeRaysville, PA 18829; Neath Welsh Congregational Church, 9043 Rt. 467, LeRaysville, PA 18829; HOPS Ambulance, c/o James Seipler, 606 Ridge Road, Rome, PA 18837; or LeRaysville-Pike Volunteer Fire Department, c/o John Keegan, Sawmill Road, LeRaysville, PA 18829, in Loretta Coleman's memory.    Towanda Daily Review – February 26, 2013

Dr. John Raymond Whitney, who died on March 2, 2006, wrote this obituary.  Also predeceasing her were her parents, Dr. Hervey M. Hagedorn, a physician, and Helen K. Hagedorn, a nurse, as well as an older sister, Betty.  A younger brother, Richard, died as a small child when struck by an automobile driven by an intoxicated driver.   Mrs. Whitney, during her lifetime, acquired the Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Mansfield University.  Prior to that she attended elementary and high school in Westfield, PA, where she lived, leaving there as a Junior to study for three years at Wheelock College in Boston.  Subsequently she extended her academic career with study at Boston University and earned a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education at the Pennsylvania State University at State College.  She taught professionally for eighteen years sequentially in Westfield, PA, Ulysses, PA, Alexandria, VA, and State College, PA.  In State College she participated as an instructor-teacher in the early development of cluster education for elementary students.  Regardless of the excellence of her professional career, she knew herself best as the wife of her husband John, mother of her son Dick, grandmother of her granddaughter Erin (Joshua) Swann, and great-grandmother of her great-grandchildren Sophia, Lilly, and Ryder.   Married April 10, 1943 in St. Martin’s Church, Providence, RI during World War II, she wrote to her overseas husband every day for two and a half years.  She knew the financial sacrifices and social tensions of living as a clergy wife from 1953 until her death.  She was an excellent cook and baker, excelling as well in the arts of knitting, rug braiding and quilting.  Suffice it to say that she worked at a professional level of excellence both at home, in the parish, and in the schoolroom.   In her later years she became an inveterate letter writer, knitting together in her correspondence a cordial network of on-going friendships.  Leaving formal theology largely to her husband, she was a life-long participant in the parish life she knew in the Episcopal Church, including a deep personal commitment to Christ and the Christian life.   A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, September 7, 2013 in All Saints Episcopal Church, Brookland, PA.  The Rev. CAPT. CHARLES LUGG
The bodies of Captain Charles M. Lugg, 35, of Nelson, Pennsylvania and three passengers in his small, private aircraft were found atop a 300-foot peak on the Caribbean island of Dominica by search teams Tuesday, December 25. The US State Department notified Captain Lugg's mother, Mrs. Ila H. Lugg Wiley of Nelson, late Tuesday that there had been no survivors in the unexplained crash. Lugg, a pilot with Trans World Airlines based in Antigua in the British West Indies, was bound with three passengers in his own plane on a flight from Antigua to Martinique, where they were to Christmas shop early last week. When the 150-mile flight failed to arrive in Martinique, Coast Guard and Navy searches were begun, when the help of the French Air Force, police and volunteers on Dominica. The island has only two small villages.  A French helicopter pilot spotted the aircraft wreckage Friday on the northeast slope of Mt. Diablotin, but was forced to avoid rescue attempts because of dangerous flying conditions. Pilots who had flown with Captain Lugg for TWA felt that those downdrafts and poor visibility the day he left for Martinique might have caused the accident, but no explanation has been offered by official sources. TWA has ordered an investigation into the mishap, even though Lugg was off-duty and flying his personal Piper Twin Comanche aircraft. Dense jungle, difficult weather and rugged terrain kept two 50-man search teams from reaching the wreckage for five days, according to Lugg's brother, Robert Lugg, Tioga County assistant superintendent of highways.  Robert Lugg was in Miami at the time of the mishap and stayed near US official sources there. Captain Lugg was born in Nelson and attended elementary school there, and high school in Elkland.  He earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Mansfield State College.   He joined the Navy as a pilot in 1963.  Captain Lugg was a member of the Board of Trustees of Mansfield State College.

SATTERLEY - Florence Ruth Place, 88, wife of Fred A. Place of 1 Western Ave. Towanda, Pa., died early Monday morning, April 21, 2008, at the Skilled Nursing Unit of Memorial Hospital, Towanda, Pa. Born in Galeton, Pa. on Dec. 30, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Wilhelmina Meikle Satterley. Florence was born with the gift of music and went on to devote her life to its study and teaching. Inspired by her talented sister Bernice, who died at age 19, Florence began taking piano lessons at age 6. She was a graduate of Galeton High School and later studied music at Mansfield State College, focusing on piano and voice. After graduation, she taught school for two years in Emporium, Pa., then briefly studied at the prestigious Julliard School conservatory in New York City. She later trained at Westminster Choir College near Princeton, N.J. Florence went on to hold positions at Willoughby Methodist Church, near Cleveland; Wyoming Seminary Preparatory School in Kingston, Pa. and East Tennessee College. She earned her master's degree at Columbia University. While teaching at Wyoming Seminary, she met Fred A. Place, a former serviceman. They were married on Oct. 5, 1951 and moved to Mansfield, Pa., where Florence taught college classes and led the college choir. The couple later moved to Towanda where they made their home. Although a successful and talented musician and teacher, Florence was a humble person. After the couple's sons, Fred and Robert were born, she devoted herself to her family and raising their children. Florence happily involved herself in the Towanda community, serving as substitute teacher in several elementary schools and leading the Towanda Presbyterian Church and Sylvania Men's choirs. She will be especially well-remembered by friends as a piano teacher. Florence believed music touched the soul. She not only taught her students the basics, such as scales, chords and exercises, she also sought to share the excitement and fun music could bring to their lives. Many of her students became skilled musicians themselves, including David Hutchings, who became a minister of music in a New Jersey church, and many winners and contestants in the Bradford-Sullivan Junior Miss/Outstanding Young Woman competition. Even as she neared the end of her teaching years, Florence could still play piano with skill and passion and maintained the rare gift she possessed throughout her life of perfect pitch. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Towanda and served as the piano accompanist for the Towanda Lions Club for many years. She is survived by: her loving and devoted husband of 56 years, Fred A. Place at home; her sons, Dr. Fred R. Place and his wife Diane Place of Towanda, Dr. Robert A. Place and his wife Jody Place of Towanda; grandsons, Fred Richard Place II. of Spring Lake, Pa., Zachary Place of Towanda, Nicholas Place of Towanda; step grandsons, Mike and Mark Cantellops of Towanda, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Vida and Arthur Spengler of Towanda; sister-in-law, Amy Barnes of Monroeton; several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two sisters, Gertrude Allen and Bernice Satterley. Florence's family extends their greatest appreciation to the Skilled Nursing Unit of Memorial Hospital in Towanda for their excellent loving care. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 27, 2008, at the First Presbyterian Church, Court St., Towanda, Pa., with the Rev. Michael Hughes, pastor, officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, at the church. The family requests that memorial contributions be directed to the First Presbyterian Church, 5 Court St., Towanda, Pa. 18848, or to the Florence Place Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Towanda Area School District Foundation, High School Drive, Towanda, Pa. 18848, in Florence's memory. WILLIAMS M. Elizabeth, "Bette" "Betsy" "Betts"

Born to Carlton & Florence VanDyke Williams on July 10, 1943 passed February 12, 2013 with 69 years of life behind her. Survived by loving brother Bob (Sharon) Williams, nephew Marc (Aida) Williams, niece Lynn Williams (Eric Burns), special great niece and special great nephew Riley and Ryan Williams Burns, and many special friends. In addition to her pets, she enjoyed books (especially biographies and poetry), sharing trips to Barnes & Noble with Riley, then on to Panera for smoothies and sometimes to Ulta to play with cosmetics and other girly delights. She enjoyed computer classes at and visits to the Steele Memorial Library. Her professions included nursing and Barbizon modeling, but her passion for teaching eventually won out and she devoted herself to children with unique challenges after earning her M.S. in Education and certification in Special Education from Mansfield University.  Bette was a special confidant to her nephew Marc and a loving patient listener. With her niece she shared family stories, interests in genealogy, and all things feline. Humble and purposeful to the end, Bette donated her body to science, requesting no funeral services. However, her family and friends will honor her memory at a poetry reading in the near future. James D. Barrett Funeral Home is assisting the family. Donations in Bette's memory are gratefully accepted and appreciated by her family and the Chemung County Humane Society and SPCA at 2435 State Route 352 Elmira NY 14903-7933 or Friends of the Steele Memorial Library (A/K/A Friends of the CCLD) at 101 E. Church St Elmira NY 14901.  We share a poem Bette carried with her:

Trees

I THINK that l shall never see

A poem as lovely as a tree

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest

Against the sweet earth's flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,

And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in summer wear

A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;

Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,

But only God can make a tree.
