SULPHUR SPRINGS, TX (KETCNBC.COM) -- A Sulphur Springs woman was killed Thursday night when the family pet, a rottweiler, mauled her.
According to Police Chief Jay Sanders, at around 7 p.m., dispatchers received word a woman had found her mother dead at her home on the floor in the 1400 block of North Davis Street. Officers learned the victim was 78-year-old Betty Wood.
Sanders stated the daughter trapped the dog in a back room until authorities made it to the scene.
The woman's body was turned over to the Medical Examiner's Office in Dallas, and a report was returned at around noon Friday. Medical officials confirmed Wood had been killed by the dog.
While awaiting the report, the dog was turned over to police by family members and quarantined. Officials euthanized the dog after the official report was in hand.
The rottweiler had been a family pet for years, and what triggered the dog to attack is unknown, said Sanders.
Texas Rangers assisted with the investigation.
