Rufus Gifford, the U.S. Ambassador to Denmark, married his partner, Dr. Stephen DeVincent, in a ceremony in Copenhagen Saturday morning, according to the Ambassador’s Instagram

Gifford, who was confirmed as ambassador to the Scandinavian nation in late 2013, noted the country’s long acceptance of same-sex marriage in his Instagram post that was bursting with newlywed pride.

“Just married in Copenhagen where the first legal gay partnerships took place 26 years ago,” Gifford wrote. “Now heading back to celebrate with our friends and family from all over the world at our residence under the American flag. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined such a perfect day. Life is good.”

Hours before posting the beaming selfie with his new husband, the ambassador posted a gorgeous photo of the clear, blue sky above an expansive field dotted with trees and the statuesque estate of Hermitage Palace, long used as a hunting lodge for Denmark’s royal family. “Well played, Denmark,” wrote Gifford in that Instagram post. “I knew you wouldn’t let me down.”

Before President Obama nominated Gifford to be the U.S. Ambassador to Denmark in 2013, he was a former finance official for the Democratic National Committee, Obama for America, and the Presidential Inaugural Committee.

The U.S. Embassy in Denmark also congratulated the newlyweds with an official photo and a post on the Embassy’s Facebook page, notes Towleroad.
