Dermot O'Leary has dusted off his tux, Ant & Dec are brushing up on their acceptance speech and the backstage bar at the O2 Arena is trying to hold off the Loose Women girls as we speak.

Yes, it can only be the National TV Awards. The TV awards voted for by the general public, so you have nobody to blame but yourself if your favourite star or show doesn't take home some silverware.

Digital Spy will be live blogging the events throughout the evening, so stick with us for live updates and commentary across the two-and-a-half-hour telly extravaganza.

The National Television Awards kick off at 7.30pm on ITV1.

> National Television Awards 2012: Nominations shortlist - In Full

22:02Well, it's been emotional! But that's that... until next year! So how are you feeling? Did your favourites win, or do you think some people were cruelly snubbed? Let us know in the comments!

22:01It's not only Betty getting thanked - creator Tony Warren gets namechecked too. Congrats, Corrie!

22:00There's an awful lot of them. They're still piling onto the stage. It's like a never-ending stream of people. Cor, blimey. They dedicate the award to Betty Driver - sweet.

21:59And the winner is... of course it is! It's Corrie! Are you happy? Sad? Distraught? Ecstatic? Let us know!

21:55Ooh, here's a BIG one. 'Serial Drama'. We're a bit worried that this might spark some soap fan-on-soap fan battles in the streets. If anyone can stop that, it's the presenter: Paul O'Grady! As if you didn't know, the nominees are: EastEnders, Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks!

21:49Can you believe the night's almost over? This is our final ad break! Savour it, everyone.

21:49Sachsgate reference! (He admits that he knows why some people didn't stand by him...) And then he gives a lovely, really sweet little speech to his wife Jane, who goes all blushy. Lovely.

21:48Anyway, the VT is done (phew) and Jonathan's up on stage to accept his award! I think he is a bit choked up, you know. He did a bit of throat-clearing when he got up there. His first words are to pay tribute to Sir Bruce, and then he thanks everyone for the award and anyone who's helped him over the years.

21:47Is Jonathan Ross getting a bit teary? It looks like he might be... (To be fair, it must feel a bit awkward having a camera on you while a massively-long VT all about you plays to millions of people.)

21:45There are loads of talking heads in this VT. Even Daniel Radcliffe's getting in on the action!

21:43This is a bit like a bad comedy roast. But Sir Bruce cutely adds: "He's a very naughty boy, but I still love him." Time for some JR best bits! (Quick, hide all footage of Sachsgate...)

21:41So who's the lucky winner of the 'Special Recognition' award? It's only Jonathan Ross! Apparently, he once said about Brucie: "Every night before Strictly, they have to take Sir Bruce Forsyth out of the freezer and push him on." Outrageous!

21:38Ooh, another Very Big Honour - the 'Special Recognition' award is next up. And Brucie's back to hand it out! We're having microphone issues. Slick!

21:37Matt Smith update: Apparently he might not have said he has "no plans" to leave Who after all. Clearly, it's a bit hectic backstage. Time to hide the champagne, perhaps!

21:37And the winner is... Outnumbered! Tyger Drew-Honey is clearly a bit excited - he did a proper rockstar scream down the camera. I'm just happy to see Ramona Marquez on stage. What a star. Hugh Dennis says none of them were expecting the prize. He also insists he's a better parent in real life. Sure...

21:34Let's get down to business - the nominees are Outnumbered, Benidorm and Miranda. It could go to any of them!

21:33Lines for 'Serial Drama' have CLOSED. So don't vote, alright? Time for 'Best Sitcom'... and who better to present than Richard Wilson? What's more, he's got a bagpiper to welcome him on. Karen Gillan will be thrilled.

21:28A few of you have been asking us to clarify the Matt Smith comments, so here we go! In the press room backstage, he said he has no plans to leave. Then apparently he told the Radio Times he has one year left. We're just as confused as you.

21:27Dermot gets some glory, hurrah! You could class that as a surprise - after all, there was a lot of talk about Strictly beating The X last year. But The X Factor continues to be a BEAST. Tulisa and Gary are up doing the speech (Little Mix are on stage, too.)

© PA Images / Yui Mok/PA Wire

21:26And the winner is... The X Factor!

21:24Anyway, let's get on with it - the nominees for 'Talent Show' are The X Factor, Strictly Come Dancing, Dancing On Ice and Britain's Got Talent. It's a tough category!

21:23Phew, Sophie McShera has a cute little thank you for the audience and then it's time to move on. Time for another prize - 'Talent Show'! And the stunning Elle Macpherson is here to present it. Dermot does a little jump to show how tall she is. But Elle's feeling a bit flirty - apparently she saw Dermot without his shirt on and he's "very gorgeous". Phew, is it getting hot in here?

21:22Hugh Bonneville's gone all blustery and pays tribute to the other nominees ("the losers," he's thinking.) He says he's overwhelmed about the reaction to the show and then does all the thank yous. There are an awful lot of Downton stars on the stage. I hope they're not all doing a speech. The new series will never get filmed.

© PA Images / Yui Mok/PA Wire

21:20And the winner is... Downton Abbey! See? Matthew Crawley's tingles are all-powerful.

21:18Two of the women from The Choir are presenting the 'Drama' award! This is a biggie - the nominees are Doctor Who, Merlin, Downton Abbey and Waterloo Road. Can the Doctor grab a triple? Can Merlin magic up a win? Can Downton do it? Or will Waterloo Road be the surprise victor again? Who are you rooting for?

21:16We're getting loads of teary pictures of The Choir and soldiers being reunited with their families. NTAs, seriously, are you trying to make everyone at home cry?

21:15Fancy another musical interlude? It's the Military Wives! (Dermot calls them the winners of last year's "surprise hit The Choir". I'm sure there's no X Factor bitterness going on there.) Anyway, they're singing 'Make You Feel My Love'.

21:09Holly - a two-time winner tonight - gives a lovely speech to thank everyone and says she feels "proud". Philip takes over the thank yous and reminds everyone it's two years in a row. Eamonn's after a hat trick now. Cheeky.

Cast and crew of This Morning collect the Factual Programme award on stage during the 2012 NTA Awards

© PA Images / Yui Mok/PA Wire

21:08And the winner is... This Morning! Philip Schofield and Holly Willoughby do well-practised shocked faces. They must surely have known? I think it was the woman with two vaginas that did it, personally.

21:07Oo-er, Hilary Devey is the next presenter to arrive on stage! Not going to lie, she scares me a bit. Dermot has to help her on stage because she's twisted her knee. I'm a little less terrified. Anyway, she's presenting 'Factual Programme': The nominees are An Idiot Abroad, Top Gear, This Morning and My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding. What do you think will take it?

21:05It's time for Gary to get up and collect his prize (soundtracked with rousing Take That, of course.) He thanks the people he works with on charity projects, the celebs who agree to do stuff to raise money, and the public for donating. It's all so lovely. Hurrah for Gary! If this show gets any more heartwarming I might need to take some indigestion tablets.

© PA Images / Yui Mok/PA Wire

21:04We're getting a VT of all of Gary's charity work, the Kiliminjaro climb, a shocking blonde hairdo on BBC Breakfast, a performance on Children In Need, The X Factor. We can see him in the little box in the corner, and he's clearly feeling a bit emotional. The lip's quivering. Can he hold it together?

21:02Chris lists the winner's various charity achievements (then jokes it's because he wants a knighthood.) But who is the victor? It's only GAAAARY BARLOOOW!

21:01Time for the 'Outstanding Contribution' award! This is another of those prizes that are a Very Big Honour. And the lucky winner gets to meet Chris Moyles, who's presenting it. Now that's a prize.

21:00Ant has broken and just repeats: "Thanks" over and over again. Dec jumps in and thanks male kangaroos for their contribution. Oo-er. Oh look, the three finalists are there, too! Dougie has "nothing to say". But he looks great, so that's something.

20:58This Come Dine With Me clip is the bizarrest thing I've ever seen. How did I miss that episode? Anyway, the winner is I'm A Celebrity! Another prize for Ant & Dec's mantelpiece. They'll need to buy a new house soon just for award space.

20:55And we're back! Time for the 'Reality Show' award - presented by will.i.am. Yes, I'm pandering and not giving him capitals. Anyway, the nominees are: I'm A Celebrity, The Only Way Is Essex, Come Dine With Me and The Apprentice. Kind of want The Apprentice to win just to have Nick Hewer and will.i.am on the same stage.

20:51While you're waiting, Matt Smith's said backstage that he has no plans to leave Doctor Who. Good news, right?

20:49STOP EVERYTHING. We're getting a clip from The Muppet Movie. I'm glad we're getting an advert break - I need the time to compose myself.

20:49Katherine's written a few words - she thanks everyone for voting (she wants to give them a hug, Becky-style) and says she will never forget the Corrie fans, or her role. It's a lovely little speech and all the more emotional considering the context.

Ryan Thomas and Paula Lane collect the Serial Drama Performance on behalf of Katherine Kelly during the 2012 NTA Awards

© PA Images / Yui Mok/PA Wire

20:47And the winner is... Katherine Kelly! (I'm honestly trying not to be smug.) But she's not there because she's doing some "acting" thing at the "National Theatre". It's a shame she won't get her moment in the NTA spotlight, but it's really nice she's won.

20:45Fancy seeing someone else win a gong? The 'Serial Drama Performance' nominees are Jessie Wallace, Danny Miller, Alison King and Katherine Kelly. Katherine's got to be in with a shout considering her recent exit, right?

20:44Ooh, Lara Pulver's up to present 'Serial Drama Performance' so the NTA producers have decided it's a good opportunity to see her getting a bit naked (or a lot naked) in Sherlock. Time to call OFCOM. Appalling stuff.

20:43They might be serial winners, but the pair are still lovely and humble (Dec thanks the people that make them look good, cutely.) And now Ant's paying tribute to Brucie. I'm feeling in a good place. "Ah well," Dermot sighs, despondently. We still love you, Dermot! (Even if I got excited when a green puppet replaced you momentarily...)

20:41Kermit moans that there's no amphibian in the bunch. Kermit, come and live with me. Anyway, the winner is... Ant & Dec! That's their 11th win, fact fans.

20:39OH MY GOSH. Highlight of the night alert - it's Kermit O'Leary! You can't go wrong with a Muppet. Kermit's stepping in for the X Factor host because it's time for the 'Entertainment Presenter' award. The nominees are: Ant & Dec, Dermot (obviously), Keith Lemon and Michael McIntyre. I want Dermot to win if only for his shimmies on The X Factor and the fact that he told a rude auditionee to watch his mouth.

20:38Steven Moffat - the Doctor Who boss - is starting a Mexican wave on Twitter following Matt and Karen's wins. Cute.

20:33Now that's a pleasing result, isn't it? Matt's all quirky and fidgety, just like you'd hope. He does his thanks, and finishes with a peace sign and "nuff love". Are everyone's cockles suitably warmed?

20:32And the winner is... Matt Smith! It's a double whammy for the Who!

20:29Back to the awards and it's another biggie - 'Male Drama Performance'! Caroline Quentin's here to present, but if you need a reminder, the nominees are Matt Smith, John Barrowman, Martin Clunes and David Threlfall.

20:27What's more, Jesy's hairdo has become perhaps even more spectacular than it was on The X Factor. What style! They look like proper popstars.

20:26'Don't Let Go'. Let's just pretend this was the winner's song and not 'Cannonball', agreed? I'm pleased to see the ladies on television again. I'm already excited about the super-slick harmony bit (best part, right?)

20:25Dermot's gone into the audience. And said hello to Louie Spence. Moving swiftly on... time for a little musical interlude. It's only Little Mix!

20:20Alan's a bit taken with Thierry. He's so excited, it's really quite cute. He thanks everyone, of course (are you sensing a theme?) Alan says he was preparing to do his "bitter clap". Aww.

Alan Carr with the award for Best Talk Show on stage during the 2012 NTA Awards

© PA Images / Yui Mok/PA Wire

20:18And the winner is... Alan Carr: Chatty Man! Oh bless, Alan was not expecting that (or he's a super actor).

20:16Okay, so I'm totally professional. The nominees are The Graham Norton Show, The Jonathan Ross Show, Alan Carr: Chatty Man and Loose Women. Place your bets now!

20:15Time for another award! Dermot's a bit excited - Thierry Henry's here to present the 'Talk Show' prize! Um, I'm a bit excited too. He's in a suit. Va va voom indeed.

20:15David asks to share his advice with Professor Greg White, who he works with on Sport Relief. David gives a lovely speech and then he says he's got an exclusive - Alan Carr's going to do the challenge in a thong! Looks like it's the first Alan's heard of it... (I'd pay. I'm just saying.)

20:14David's up to collect his award! And he's getting a pretty rapturous reception, too - which is just lovely. They're not even letting him speak. "All it was was showing off," he jokes.

20:13This is a lovely, heartwarming VT actually. Coldplay's 'Paradise' and crowds of cheering people and charity. Excuse me, I need to have a moment.

20:12It's time for the 'Landmark' award now (that's a big honour, you know.) It's going to a certain David Walliams, who sicked his way up the Thames for charity. Say what you like about him, but you can't deny that it was a pretty big feat (and raised an awful lot of money.) One lady in the VT even says he's made the country "perfect". I could do with a bit less Come Fly With Me, but I'll let it pass.

20:10Speaking of adorable, the news from backstage is that Karen Gillan is thrilled she won on Burns Night. Get that girl some haggis.

20:10Jacqueline gets a kiss from Mark Wright. Far better than any 'award', surely. Aww bless, she's lost for words. She thanks everyone and then has an adorable little giggle. Sweet.

Jacqueline Jossa on stage with her best newcomer award during the 2012 NTA Awards

© PA Images / Ian West/PA Wire

20:09And the winner is... Jacqueline Jossa! Well deserved, right? She certainly looks thrilled.

20:07Up next, it's time for the 'Best Newcomer' award! And who better to present it than a certain TOWIE star? Yup, Mark Wright's the one with the special envelope. Reem! (I know, I can't carry that off.) The nominees are: Jacqueline Jossa from EastEnders, Chelsea Halfpenny from Emmerdale and Chris Fountain from Coronation Street... Do you have a favourite?

20:03Time for another break! I know, it's tough. But we've got a treat for you - you can check out our gallery from the red carpet right here. Don't say we're not good to you, alright?

20:02It's over to Fearne and Holly Willoughby to do the sensible thank yous. Oh dear, as Keith leans in for one more interjection, the music starts playing. "Well, that was brief," says Dermot. I love you, Dermot.

20:02Keith thanks his dad Billy Ocean, and does a bit of singing. It could be worse, though - he's mainly just thanking everyone for voting. Oh wait, now he's thanking the "ladies in his life".

Leigh Francis, Fearne Cotton and Holly Willoughby collect the award for Panel Gameshow on stage at the 2012 NTA Awards

© PA Images / Yui Mok/PA Wire

20:01An acceptance speech from Keith Lemon. This won't be annoying. Ahem. Fearne Cotton apologises for him in advance (probably just as well.)

20:00And the winner is... Celebrity Juice! (Hate to say I told you so... but hey, actually, I quite like being smug.)

19:57Over 3m votes were cast for the NTA's apparently! Blimey, right? But here's the 'Comedy Panel Show' category, presented by Mr Russell Kane. He's got a rather spectacular blonde quiff. Maybe there was a "parrot" dress code? Here are the nominations: QI, Mock The Week, Have I Got News For You and Celebrity Juice! (I think the Juice might just have it...)

19:55The question now, of course, is whether Matt Smith can follow his co-star and grab a prize... Do you think he can do it?

19:55Karen's looking blooming marvellous in a short black dress. She's wonderfully charming accepting the award, too (she's "terrified" apparently.) It's nice she's bagged the gong before leaving the show, isn't it?

Karen Gillan with the award for Best Drama Performance on stage during the 2012 NTA Awards

© PA Images / Yui Mok/PA Wire

19:54And the winner is... Karen Gillan! Hurrah!

19:52Here we go then, time to give a lovely actress a pretty award! Downton's Hugh Bonneville is the lucky man presenting this one. Here are the nominees: Eve Myles, Karen Gillan, Jaye Jacobs (Waterloo Road) and Suranne Jones (Scott & Bailey). Who's your pick?

19:51Dermot's showing us all of the stars in the audience (cue awkward, possibly tipsy waving down the camera). The Loose Women round off the tour, but they're nothing without CBB's Denise, right?

19:49I'll be honest. I feel like the tone of the evening has been set by that McIntyre win. But who are you hoping will win the 'Female Drama Performance' award? For me it's a toss-up between Karen Gillan (fab in 'The Girl Who Waited' episode of Doctor Who) or Eve Myles (who I imagine will give a fab acceptance speech).

19:45After the break, the 'Female Drama' award is given to a dramatic female. Thanks for that, Dermot - never would have guessed. Time for the ads already, but we've got the ladies and the panel show category to come next!

19:44Michael does a consummate award speech - humble, grateful and not overlong. Congratulations! Dermot's opening the phone lines for the 'Serial Drama' category now, so if you want to give Corrie, 'Enders, Emmerdale or Hollyoaks a vote, now's your chance.

19:42So what do you think of our first winner, then? It was guessable considering how popular Michael is with the public, but it feels like Take Me Out has been a bit robbed. And Dynamo's pretty special. But Michael's quite charming - he's a bit shocked and "so, so grateful". Bless.

Michael McIntyre collects the Most Popluar Entertainment programme award for Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow during the 2012 NTA Awards

© PA Images / Ian West/PA Wire

19:41And the winner is... Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow!

19:39Tulisa's the one handing this award out, and she's dressed in an, um, eye-catching pink number. She looks a bit like a glamorous parrot. Here are the nominees: Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow, Dynamo: Magician Impossible, Harry Hill's TV Burp and Take Me Out.

19:37A bit of Strictly-BGT banter there as Brucie accuses them of stealing Alesha. But let's get into the real meat of the NTA sandwich. It's time to hand out some awards! First up: Most Popular Entertainment Programme!

19:36Ooh, awkward banter. I'm expecting a lot of that tonight. But hey, we're getting another version of 'Let There Be Love' with lots of new lyrics from the trio, making it all current, like. To be honest, I'd rather they'd done PJ & Duncan's seminal hit 'Let's Get Ready To Rhumble'.

© PA Images / Ian West/PA Wire

19:34Who doesn't love a bit of Brucie dancing? The crowd at the O2 are certainly getting into the spirit of the thing. But here are those friends... it's only Ant and Dec! "What a lovely surprise," says Bruce. He doesn't read the papers, then.

19:32Sir Bruce Forsyth with some "very special friends" are opening the show. Shame we all know who those are already, but if you don't I'll keep my mouth zipped. Come on everyone - sing along to 'Let There Be Love' with Brucie!

19:31Say hello to Dermot, who's looking very dapper! He's also nominated for an award himself (which could end up being a little awkward...) The show certainly looks super-glam - glitzy and sparkly and fancy!

19:29Twitter tells me there's been a huge traffic jam on the way to the O2. Let's hope everyone got there in time... because here we go!

19:26Eee! Just one ad break to go and we'll be in the O2 with all the stars, glitz and glamour. From the rumours, we're expecting some very special musical performances and a certain green frog...

19:21So, there are only around ten minutes to go now! Are you getting excited? Get to the telly, grab your snacks and make sure you're properly settled on the sofa. And if you want some NTA goodness now, check out the full list of nominations, some pretty pictures of nominees, and our tips for victory. But who are you rooting for?
