At the US Open on Wednesday, top seeds Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan fell to countrymen Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-3. It was only their second loss in the first round of a major since 2001 and marks the first season since 2004 that the Bryans haven't won at least one Grand Slam title.

"We've played them 15 times and maybe won twice," said Querrey. "They've been tricky every time and we're just happy to hold on in the end."

Second seeds Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo were upset by Dominic Inglot and Robert Lindstedt 6-7(3), 7-5, 6-4 in two hours and six minutes. Dodig and Melo, the reigning Roland Garros champions, won just one of 10 break points

But it wasn't all bad for seeded teams.

Eighth seeds Jamie Murray and John Peers began their US Open campaign with a 6-3, 6-2 win over American wild cards Bjorn Fratangelo and Dennis Novikov. The British-Australian team, who reached their first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon, needed just 59 minutes to claim the victory. They didn’t face a break point.

Murray and Peers will next meet Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo and Australia’s Rameez Junaid who defeated Chile’s Julio Peralta and American Matt Seeberger 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Sixth seeds Rohan Bopanna and Florin Mergea defeated American duo Austin Krajicek and Nicholas Monroe 6-3, 6-4. The Indian-Romanian pair are currently seventh in the Emirates ATP Doubles Race to London.

Bopanna and Mergea's next opponents are Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Santiago Gonzalez, who advanced after withstanding a tough battle against the Polish pairing of Tomasz Bednarek and Jerzy Janowicz, triumphing 6-7(5), 7-6(3), 6-4 in two hours and 20 minutes.

Ninth seeds Daniel Nestor and Eduoard Roger-Vasselin took 65 minutes to claim victory against Chris Guccione and Andre Sa 6-4, 6-4. They next face Jeremy Chardy and Lukasz Kubot who defeated Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner 7-5, 6-3.

Also victorious were 12^th seeded Frenchmen Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut, who took 68 minutes to dismantle Guillermo Duran and Victor Estrella Burgos 6-3, 6-4.

In the next round, Herbert and Mahut will face off against Mate Pavic and Michael Venus who beat Aljaz Bedene and Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-3, 7-6(5) in one hour and 15 minutes.

Leonardo Mayer and Joao Sousa saved two match points to upset 11th seeds Vasek Pospisil and Jack Sock 4-6, 7-6(8), 7-5 in two hours and 14 minutes. The Argentinian-Portuguese team saved match points at 6-7 and 7-8 in the second set tie-break.

Elsewhere, Aliaksandr Bury and Denis Istomin topped Radu Albot and Janko Tipsarevic 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, whilst Gilles Muller and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi took out Dusan Lajovic and Viktor Troicki 6-2, 6-3.

The 14^th seeded Colombian team of Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah defeated American wild cards Denis Kudla and Tim Smyczek 7-5, 6-2 without facing a break point.

Thomaz Bellucci and Marcelo Demoliner had a tougher battle against another wild card pairing of Americans Deiton Baughman and Tommy Paul, needing one hour and 43 minutes to win 7-6(1), 7-6(5).
