Traditional, institutionally supported learning management systems (LMSs) provide many features and benefits, however, most LMSs do not provide tools and features that are comparable to emerging learning technologies.  Also, since many LMS products require expensive licensing agreements or support teams, these tools are not necessarily the best models for users who may wish to implement their own online learning initiatives. In this paper, an evaluation of the use of Google Sites and Google+ in place of several LMS components for an online graduate-level course will be reported.  Data was gathered from students over multiple offerings of a course that utilized Google tools for information presentation and discussion. Participants provided personal perceptions and reactions to using the Google platform in general, as well as feedback and comparative opinions between the Google platform and previous experiences using the institutionally supported LMS.

Abstract We discuss the importance of visualization skills in engineering education and propose a dual approach to helping students improve their spatial abilities. The approach is based on computer graphics applications, and uses both Web-based graphics applications and a sketch-based modeling, system. By combining these approaches, we can capture students' attention and foster two important engineering skills: freehand sketching and an understanding of the relationship between orthographic and axonometric views.

The focus on inclusive approaches to higher education and increasing availability of educational technologies designed to enhance student communication and collaboration has led to new opportunities for widening participation and improving the learning outcomes of students from diverse backgrounds. However, despite the potential, the principles of inclusive education are often applied in ways that serve to further disenfranchise the very students the approach seeks to support. This paper draws on research undertaken through funding support provided by the Australian Government, Office for Learning and Teaching in presenting the case for teachers to adapt their learning and teaching strategies to address an increasingly diverse student population and to adopt more transformative pedagogical approaches to engaging all students with “difference”. This paper explores issues of particular relevance to the design of technology enhanced learning that is inclusive of the diverse needs of higher education students with disabilities, however, the term “diverse students” is preferred, acknowledging the transient nature of some disabilities, the varying ways in which individuals choose to identify, the multiple layers of equity overlap, and the benefits of inclusive design of technology enhanced learning for all students. The inclusive education approach presented in the paper incorporates accessibility, usability, personalization and transformative pedagogy within a holistic model, as well as strategies for implementation at the institutional, program and individual student level. This paper concludes by arguing for more transformative approaches to understanding diversity and strategies for implementing inclusive design of technology enhanced learning in the higher education context.

In 2003, the University of Hawai 'i (UH) Department of Family Medicine and Community Health entered a 4-year cooperative agreement with the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration to establish the "Pacific Association for Clinical Training" (PACT). PACT's goal is to develop effective distance education methods to improve the education and skills of healthcare professionals in the U.S.- Affiliated Pacific Island nations. To determine the situation existing in 2004, one of PACT's first projects was to perform site visits to each jurisdiction, conducting needs assessments through interviews with key healthcare professionals, hospital administrators, and government officials. This article highlights findings of PACT's Guam Assessment. Meant to establish a baseline for future reference, all data are those collected in 2004/2005 and have not been updated.

This study investigate faculty members' practices for developing effective learning and teaching in high education and reported barriers in relation to the use of smart boards in Salman bin Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia. A mixed methods design that combines quantitative and qualitative data collection and analyses was utilized in this study. Results of the questionnaire statistical analysis indicate that most of the faculty members at SAU use smart board in the classroom. Most of them are used the smart board as a (white) screen to only display presentations (PowerPoint). Some of them reported using a smart board for writing and drawing lessons on it. Very few of the faculty members use smart board in student assessment, student engagement, or solving problem teaching. It seems that most of faculty members use smart boards in limited success because lack of pedagogical training, technical support and appropriate software.

In the last century, teachers have come under pressure to incorporate new media technologies into their lessons. Comparing educational research, press coverage, and teachers' firsthand accounts of mediated instruction between 1919 and 1946, this article highlights a historic discrepancy between anticipated and actual uses of media in classrooms. Drawing on de Certeau's theory of “making do,” the author argues that teachers' efforts to balance high technologies with simpler, more do-it-yourself varieties of media in their lessons constituted critical forms of participation in educational media culture and small acts of resistance against industrial, top-down efforts to streamline, modernize, and technologize their work.

This research examines the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) to integrating e-learning perceived by academic staff at a university in Uganda and a university in Tanzania. Mixed-methods research was used in which a main qualitative study was complemented by a quantitative method. The sample participants were academic staff from Mountains of the Moon University in Uganda (n = 20) and Mzumbe University in Tanzania (n = 20). The SWOTs from three aspects are analysed: institution-related, instruction-related and investment-related aspects. The results show that at both universities the institutions and teachers understand the need to integrate e-learning, which provides strengths and opportunities for the universities; however, the lack of capacities in terms of institutional policies, teacher competences and internal investment constitutes the weaknesses and threats for the universities.

In this paper, is given a description of didactic- pedagogical and technological aspects, relevant to the proposition of an educational model suited to the emergence of a new profile of students and teachers from the new knowledge society. It is proposed a model that merges the didactic-pedagogical demands with the possibilities of attendance to these demands provided by the Information Technology and Communication – ICT, here regarded as an essential support to the processes of teaching and learning. This proposal is based on an ontological model created from the academic curriculum as well as the use of a model of personalized education, made possible through the use of software tools focused on the profile and performance of the students.

Researchers have called for renewed efforts in exploring both what knowledge should be taught in preservice teacher education programs with regard to technology, and how to best prepare teachers to effectively use that knowledge to support teaching and learning. This study compared the importance of technology topics from teacher educators and teachers’ perspectives. A two-phase mixed-methods research design utilized surveys and multiple case studies (interviews, documents) to collect data from both teacher educators and practicing teachers. Findings indicate that teachers and teacher educators demonstrated similarities in their views regarding the use of technology for personal productivity, information presentation, and the access and use of electronic resources to support teaching and learning. Teacher educators and teachers differed with regard to their use of technology for communication, analysis of student data, documenting professional growth, and facilitating higher-order thinking skills. Recommendations for how teacher education programs can incorporate and address technology topics in order to increase relevance for teachers are discussed.
