Summary

In 1978, Soviet Lithuanian Vilma Bardauskienė had become the first woman to surpass seven metres with a world record of 7.07 (23-2½), and she bettered that mark ten days later with 7.09 (23-3¼). But she was injured and did not compete in Moskva. Also missing were the American jumpers, but they probably would not have affected the final outcome. The competition in Moskva went back and forth and was not settled until the final round. [Tatyana Skachko] (URS) led in round three with 7.01 (23-0), and would eventually win bronze. In round six, Soviet [Tatyana Kolpakova] jumped 7.06 (23-2), threatening the world record, to take the lead. But East Germany's [Brigitte Wujak] threatened that with 7.04 (23-1¼) on her final jump, winning the silver medal.
